About

Jonathan Winter is an independent Post-War and Contemporary Art appraiser and art advisor based in New York City, with nearly twenty years of experience working in the arts. In 2018 he started J. Winter Art Associates LLC, which provides art consulting services to private clients, and in 2024 added fine art appraisal to his practice after becoming qualified by the Appraiser’s Association of America. He started his career in 2008 at Marlborough Gallery in New York, a fine art gallery specializing in Modern, Post-War, and Contemporary Art with multiple national and international locations. Following his time at Marlborough Gallery, Jonathan transitioned to the auction world, joining Phillips (2011-2014) as a cataloguer in the Contemporary Art Department where he was responsible for the overall composition of the May and November Contemporary Art auction catalogues, including writing the copy, art direction of the book’s layout, writing the condition reports, and working on auction estimates. In 2014, Jonathan rejoined the gallery sector, becoming a senior associate at Michael Rosenfeld Gallery (2014 - 2016), which specializes in Modern and Post-War Art with a focus on African American artists. Shortly after, Jonathan started his advisory practice as he watched his family’s private collection grow under his careful management and thorough research of the evolving art market, and began to work with new collectors to begin their own personal collecting journeys. He has worked on permanent collection acquisitions involving such artists as Hernan Bas, George Condo, Rashid Johnson, Vija Celmins, Carmen Herrera, Charles Gaines, Sanford Biggers, Marcel Dzama, Teresita Fernandez, Vik Muniz, Sterling Ruby, Jesse Mockrin, Larry Bell, among many others. Over the course of his career, he has also been a key speaker on the art market and collecting at lectures at UBS in New York and Sotheby’s Institute of Art in London. Additionally, Jonathan sits on the National Advisory Council to the Tang Museum at Skidmore College as well as being part of the Curator’s Circle at the Guggenheim Museum, and an Accredited Member of the Appraisers Association of America.
