About
A native of New York City, I am a former professor and museum curator with an MA in Asian art and a PhD in Japanese art from the University of Kansas. I have been appraising Asian art, conducting collection assessments, advising individuals on acquisitions and sales, authenticating art, and serving as an expert witness since 1993, for individuals, museums, universities, corporate collections, attorneys, the IRS, and insurance companies. I specialize in a wide variety of Asian fine and decorative arts, past and present, with special expertise in Japanese, Korean, and Chinese arts (especially paintings, prints, and calligraphy; Chinese and Japanese religious sculpture; historic and contemporary Japanese ceramics; and Japanese bamboo arts). I am also an Adjunct Research Associate at the University of Kansas Center for East Asian Studies; recently served as on the thesis committee for an MA student at the Art & Art History Department of the University of Colorado, Boulder; and served as a consultant to an exhibition on Japanese women artists at the Denver Art Museum and an online exhibition on Obaku Zen art for the Center for Buddhist Studies of the University of Arizona Center for Buddhist Studies. My many publications on Japanese art & design, and the connoisseurship & collecting of Chinese & Korean art in Japan include three books: Japanese Design: An Illustrated Guide to Art, Architecture, and Aesthetics in Japan; Faith and Power in Japanese Buddhist Art: 1600-2005 (2007); and Tea of the Sages: the Art of Sencha (revised edition 2024).
