It is a hybrid type - what is known as a "Kunstkammer" - that combines art, antiques, and "curiosities." The gallery is located in Red Springs, North Carolina, which many artists, for over a century, have called home. While several of Red Springs' artists have become well known nationally and internationally, others are still making their way. The gallery’s main mission is to provide a venue for local artists to exhibit their work. Also, the gallery will bring outsiders' works to Red Springs so that its visitors will be current on global trends. Red Springs Artspace occupies two adjacent buildings on Main Street: an old Opera House and a former department store. The total square footage is approximately 19,000 including a courtyard in the back of the Opera House. The Opera House was built in 1900 as a bank, which occupied the first floor, and an opera house, which occupied the second floor, by mayor A.B. Pearsall and other prominent citizens. At the time the Opera House was the most imposing building on Main Street. While renovating the Opera House, the gallery owners have made every effort to preserve its original architectural style as well as the stage on the second floor.…
