Your Australian art guide for May 2026 is here

May 2026 brings a packed calendar of art exhibitions across Australia, with highlights including Rone's 'Another TIME' at COMA Gallery in Sydney, the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes at the Art Gallery of NSW, and solo shows by Eleanor Louise Butt, Jordan Gogos, Natalya Hughes, Patricia Piccinini, and Michaela Gleave. Regional venues like Bundanon and Ngununggula also feature major exhibitions, including a posthumous show of Rosalie Gascoigne alongside new commissions by First Nations women artists.

Women’s Work: The art of Dana Boussard (museum exhibition)

In 1973, three pioneering women artists—Lela Autio, Dana Boussard, and Nancy Erickson—proposed an exhibition of their soft sculpture at the University of Montana in Missoula, but were denied because their work was dismissed as "women's work." Undeterred, they staged the show in the empty Carnegie Library building in 1974, and a year later the Missoula Art Museum (MAM) was founded. Now, MAM's special exhibition "Women's Work" celebrates the museum's 50th anniversary by featuring works from these three artists, including three pieces by Dana Boussard: "The Rialto" (1971), "Sister" (1970), and "Another Time, Another Place" (1970). The exhibition honors the radical spirit of the original 1974 show and the fiber-art movement, which gained momentum alongside the women's movement and feminist art.

Suman Dey’s new solo in Kolkata gives form to the abstract notions around us

Artist Suman Dey presents his second solo exhibition, titled *Chance, Remains of Another Time*, at Emami Art in Kolkata. The show features large-scale works on wood and other materials that explore abstract notions of memory, time, and nature through fragmented forms, textures, and narrative. Key pieces include a series of frames capturing everyday surface textures and a work titled *Journey* that uses boat shapes to depict transformation. The exhibition runs until May 9.

Dual Exhibitions at Emami Art Kolkata Explore Memory, Materiality, and City Life

Emami Art in Kolkata is set to launch two concurrent exhibitions on March 20, 2026, titled "Nothing Twice" and "Chance Remains of Another Time." "Nothing Twice," a group show curated by Ushmita Sahu, features nine emerging women artists exploring themes of impermanence and domesticity through diverse media including textiles, ceramics, and video. Running alongside it is a solo presentation by Kolkata-based artist Suman Dey, whose new polyptych works utilize abstract fragments to mirror the complexities and decay of contemporary urban life.
