SeMA opens new retrospective on Yoo Young-kuk, modern master of the 'mountain within'

The Seoul Museum of Art (SeMA) has opened a major retrospective on Korean abstract artist Yoo Young-kuk titled "A Mountain Within Me" at its Seosomun main branch. The exhibition, marking the 110th anniversary of the artist's birth, is the largest ever mounted on Yoo, featuring 178 works including 115 oil paintings and 15 canvases from the artist's family's private holdings shown publicly for the first time. Curated by Yeo Kyung-hwan, the show defies chronology, beginning in 1964 and moving backward through Yoo's Tokyo years and the lost decade after Korea's liberation, then forward through his geometric abstractions of the 1960s and 1970s, culminating in his late "mind-image abstraction" phase after 1980.

Double Take: Recurrent Dialogues in the Art of Herbert Bayer

The Resnick Center for Herbert Bayer Studies in Aspen, Colorado, is opening a new exhibition titled "Double Take: Recurrent Dialogues in the Art of Herbert Bayer" on June 12, 2026. The show features over 70 works by Bayer, many rarely seen, on loan from the Denver Art Museum, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, and the George Eastman Museum. The exhibition pairs and clusters Bayer's works to explore the interdependency of mediums across his career, from 1930s surrealist photomontages to 1970s geometric abstractions.

Katara hosts exhibition on Compositions of Art

The Cultural Village Foundation (Katara) in Doha, Qatar, opened an exhibition titled "Compositions from the Spirit of Art" by Qatari visual artist Dania Tariq, running until next Monday. The show features 34 artworks across four collections that explore human and national identity, geometric abstraction, and color harmony, using mixed media such as plaster, fabric, "sadu" weaving, burlap, metals, and beads. Tariq, who is hearing-impaired, transforms silence into a vibrant visual language, blending visual art with musical sensation.
