Amanda Heng Walks the Walk

Singaporean artist Amanda Heng, now 74, is representing Singapore at this year's Venice Biennale with her exhibition titled *A Pause*, featuring a site-specific installation and durational performance. Known for her decades-long performance *Let's Chat* (1996–), in which she cleans mung bean sprouts with participants to foster casual conversation, Heng transforms everyday domestic gestures into feminist acts. Her work reclaims the body, labor, and relationships as sites of personal autonomy. She was part of the pioneering, male-dominated generation of Singaporean contemporary artists in The Artists Village, but left due to its hierarchical structure to pursue collaborations with women artists and further studies.

“Human Being Human” at The Private Museum

The Private Museum in Singapore presents "Human Being Human: Selections from the Collection of John and Cheryl Chia," an exhibition running from January 19 to April 26, 2026. Organized into four chapters—"Stateless," "State," "Statehood," and "Rebirth"—the show features works by artists including Joseph Beuys, Lee Wen, Eadweard Muybridge, Sherman Ong, John Clang, Sun Xun, and Green Zeng, exploring the body as a central site of inquiry into identity, vulnerability, and societal conditioning. The collection, amassed over 25 years by doctors John and Cheryl Chia, uses the body to examine themes of statelessness, state control, collective ideology, and rebirth, with works that challenge linear narratives and embrace conceptual loops.

The installation transforms the historic Sale d’Armi into a contemplative space using larch wood platforms, photographs, and a dual-channel video that observes everyday gestures of rest and renewal in Venice and Singapore. The presentation also includes a reprint of her 1990 series 'Parts of My Body' and is accompanied by a comprehensive monograph, 'Amanda Heng: On and On'.

How Private Art Collectors In Singapore Are Helping To Shape Our Artistic Future

Singapore entrepreneur Chong Huai Seng and his daughter Ning Chong are presenting "Artist's Proof: Singapore at 60," a landmark exhibition at Artspace @ Helutrans running until 17 August 2025. Featuring over 90 artworks from Chong's private collection, the show spans 1940 to 2025 and includes more than 50 artists, mostly Singaporeans, such as Cultural Medallion recipients Cheong Soo Pieng, Chua Mia Tee, and Lee Wen, alongside emerging talents. For the first time, Chong commissioned 11 new artworks and an original musical composition for the exhibition, which he describes as his "love letter to Singapore."
