9 Must-See Shows at Paris Gallery Weekend 2025

Paris Gallery Weekend 2025 takes place May 23–25 across 74 galleries in the capital, featuring vernissages, performances, exhibition walkthroughs, and artist talks. Now in its second decade, the event was founded to spotlight Paris’s contemporary art scene and offers a counterpoint to the art fair circuit. Highlights include Sophie Calle’s "SÉANCE DE RATTRAPAGE" at Perrotin, where she revisits unfinished projects from her 2023 Picasso Museum exhibition, and major institutional shows like the David Hockney retrospective at Fondation Louis Vuitton and "Corps et âmes" at Bourse de Commerce. The weekend also includes a new Agnès Varda exhibition at Musée Carnavalet linking her photography to her Montparnasse atelier.

The show will feature the monumental 90-metre-long frieze *A Year in Normandy* (2020-21), inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry and depicting seasonal changes at the artist’s former Normandy studio, alongside iPad images created during the pandemic, the *Moon Room* series, and digital paintings from his *Sunrise* body of work. Separately, Annely Juda Fine Art will inaugurate its new London gallery in Hanover Square with a Hockney exhibition opening 7 November, showcasing recent paintings exploring reverse perspective.

The Big Review | David Hockney 25 at Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris ★★★★

The Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris has opened "David Hockney 25," a major retrospective billed as focusing on the past quarter-century of the British artist's work but actually spanning his entire career, from a 1955 portrait of his father to recent Yorkshire landscapes. The exhibition, curated by Norman Rosenthal and supported by the foundation's substantial budget, features loans from institutions worldwide and private collections, including the striking "Berlin: A Souvenir" (1962). It is the largest Hockney show ever staged, filling the Frank Gehry-designed museum with iconic swimming pool scenes, double portraits, vibrant landscapes, and densely hung salon-style galleries of family and friends.
