The exhibition was sparked by a 2024 donation of Frankenthaler's 1963 painting "Riverhead" from the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation, and features around fifty works showcasing her signature soak-stain technique, in which she applied thinned paint to unprimed canvas using sponges, brooms, and scrapers. The show traces her career chronologically, highlighting influences from Old Masters and her physical approach to painting on the floor.

Before the Myth, There Was Yoko Ono

The Broad museum in Los Angeles has opened "Yoko Ono: Music of the Mind," the first solo museum exhibition in Southern California dedicated to the artist, musician, and activist. Spanning seven decades, the retrospective focuses on Ono's conceptual and participatory works—such as instruction pieces from her 1964 book "Grapefruit" and interactive installations like "Wish Tree" (1996)—rather than traditional art objects. Curators organized the show around themes of human responsibility, and deliberately delay the introduction of John Lennon until the exhibition's midpoint to emphasize Ono's independent career before her marriage.

In an interview, Kouagou discusses his background as a self-taught visual artist and performer, having worked as a motion designer in advertising and as a DJ, and emphasizes writing as his central expressive medium, comparing himself more to a writer than a visual artist.

Taiba Akhuetie, a London-based artist who uses human and synthetic hair as her primary medium, is preparing for her first solo exhibition at the Sarabande Foundation. Akhuetie began her career as a braider, founding the salon Keash Braids in Peckham, and pivoted to sculptural work during the pandemic. Yoko Ono finally gets a solo show in Southern California

Yoko Ono finally receives her first solo exhibition in Southern California with "Yoko Ono: Music of the Mind" opening May 23, 2026 at the Broad museum in Los Angeles. The retrospective spans seven decades of her work as a conceptual artist, peace activist, and musician, featuring instructional pieces like "Painting to Hammer a Nail" (1961/1966), her famous 1964 book "Grapefruit," and a video of her iconic performance "Cut Piece." The exhibition, organized in collaboration with Tate Modern, also includes participatory elements such as "Wish Trees for Los Angeles" (1996/2026) and a series of peace-themed billboards, running through October 11, 2026.

Play ‘Liminal Bingo,’ Pat Perry’s Participatory Photo Treasure Hunt

Detroit-based artist Pat Perry has launched "Liminal Bingo," a participatory photo treasure hunt open to anyone with an internet connection. Participants are encouraged to go outside, gather friends, and photograph a series of illustrated prompts—such as capturing a handshake with a stranger while both wear sunglasses—using a camera or phone. When five prompts are completed in a row, players have a bingo and submit their images via Instagram or email. Photos submitted by August will be considered for a fall exhibition at Hashimoto Contemporary in New York and a potential book.
