The Best Exhibitions to See Around San Francisco During FOG Design+Art

January brings a full slate of exhibitions across the Bay Area timed to San Francisco Art Week, headlined by the 12th edition of FOG Design+Art at Fort Mason Center (January 21-25). Galerie highlights nine must-see shows, including "100 Candleholders" at Blunk Space, where international artists create candleholders inspired by JB Blunk; "New Work: Sheila Hicks" at SFMOMA, featuring fiber installations tied to personal places; "The Houses Are Haunted By White Night-Gowns" at The Future Perfect, a furniture-and-bowls installation by Studio Ahead; and "Auudi Dorsey: What’s Left, Never Left" at Jonathan Carver Moore, where the painter excavates histories of African American leisure sites.

Woody De Othello Opens the Door of His California Studio Ahead of a Major Exhibition in Miami

Woody De Othello, a self-described '90s kid from North Miami Beach now based in Oakland, California, is preparing for his largest museum exhibition to date at the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), on view through June 28, 2026. The exhibition, titled 'Coming Forth by Day,' marks a homecoming for the artist, whose Funk Art–inflected ceramic and bronze sculptures of animated household objects—telephones, clocks, fans—have gained significant attention. Othello's work, which blends cartoonish aesthetics with personal narrative, has been featured in biennials at the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Orange County Museum of Art. He works out of two East Bay studios, one a former gym for painting and ceramics, the other a woodshop for frames and pedestals, and has been represented by San Francisco dealer Jessica Silverman since 2018.

Jean-Michel Othoniel Opens His Paris Studio Ahead of a Citywide Exhibition in Avignon, France

French artist Jean-Michel Othoniel is preparing for his most ambitious project yet, a citywide exhibition titled "Othoniel Cosmos or the Ghosts of Love" in Avignon, France, opening June 28, 2025. The exhibition will feature some 250 works—including sculptures made of glass bricks and beads, plus paintings—displayed across ten museums and historical sites, including the Palais des Papes, Pont d’Avignon, Couvent Sainte-Claire, and the Lambert Collection. The project celebrates the 25th anniversary of Avignon being named a European Capital of Culture. Othoniel's Paris studio, a 40,000-square-foot former metal workshop in Montreuil that he shares with partner and artist Johan Creten, serves as the production hub for the works, with a team of 20 people on-site daily.

Studio Ahead’s installation for The Future Perfect recalls the pre-internet days of IRL antique hunting

Studio Ahead, led by curators Homan Rajai and Elena Dendiberia, has created an installation for The Future Perfect titled 'The Houses Are Haunted by White Night-Gowns,' running as a satellite to the 12th edition of FOG Design+Art in San Francisco through January 25, 2026. The show features 13 designers who each produced unique bowls, displayed on a stacked arrangement of vintage furniture sourced from Berkeley-based Mid Century Møbler and San Francisco's C. Mariani Antiques, blending Scandinavian design from the 1940s–1970s with 17th–19th century antiques.

'100 Candleholders' by Blunk Space is an exhibition to ignite creativity

Blunk Space gallery in Point Reyes Station, California, is presenting '100 Candleholders', an exhibition running from 17 January to 28 March 2026. The show features 100 artists and designers from around the world—including Max Lamb, Bethan Laura Wood, Ido Yoshimoto, and Jonathan Cross—each invited to create a candleholder inspired by the late sculptor JB Blunk, his work, or his self-built home and studio, Blunk House. This is the second installment in the '100' series, following '100 Hooks' in 2023-24, and takes its cue from Blunk's own 1981 exhibition '100 Plates Plus', which explored the artistic potential of everyday objects.
