3 art museums celebrate Betsy Wyeth, who made Maine’s landscape her canvas

Three museums are celebrating the legacy of Betsy James Wyeth, the wife of painter Andrew Wyeth, with exhibitions that highlight her role as a designer, preservationist, and creative force behind the environments that inspired her husband's iconic works. The Farnsworth Art Museum and Colby College in Maine, along with the Brandywine Museum of Art in Pennsylvania, are presenting shows that explore Betsy's architectural and landscape sensibilities, including her work on properties like Benner Island, Allen Island, and the Olson House. The exhibitions, titled "By Design: The Worlds of Betsy James Wyeth," run through late 2026 and early 2027.

One Fine Show: “Beyond Mysticism, The Modern Northwest” at the Seattle Art Museum

A new exhibition at the Seattle Art Museum, “Beyond Mysticism: The Modern Northwest,” reexamines the legacy of a 1953 LIFE magazine feature that anointed four Seattle artists—Mark Tobey, Morris Graves, Kenneth Callahan, and Guy Anderson—as the faces of a distinct regional Modernism. The show expands the original narrative by including Asian artists like Kamekichi Tokita, whose work challenges the magazine's oversimplified framing, and features 150 works across painting, drawing, photography, and sculpture. It also connects the movement to Abstract Expressionism and contemporary environmental concerns, pairing pieces by artists such as Malcolm Roberts with works by Salvador Dalí and Georgia O'Keeffe.

French artist JR has unveiled a monumental inflatable installation titled "La Caverne du Pont-Neuf" on the Pont-Neuf bridge in Paris. The immersive work, composed of giant printed canvases sculpted by air, forms a 120-meter-long cave over the Seine where visitors can walk while listening to a sound piece by former Daft Punk member Thomas Bangalter. The installation is free to visit from June 6 to 28, 2026, and pays homage to the 40th anniversary of Christo and Jeanne-Claude's iconic "Pont-Neuf Wrapped" project.

Botswana-born artist Thero Makepe presents 'We Didn’t Choose to Be Born Here: Inherited Frequencies' at the Javett Art Centre at the University of Pretoria, an exhibition running until February 13, 2027. The show combines staged portraiture, archival imagery, and documentary photography to explore themes of memory, migration, and political inheritance, focusing on the intertwined histories of Botswana and South Africa. Makepe traces his own family’s anti-apartheid struggle, including his grandfather Hippolytus Mothopeng’s flight from apartheid South Africa and the legacy of PAC leader Zephaniah Mothopeng, treating history as fragmented and continuously reassembled rather than fixed.
