NEXT in the Gallery: See Pittsburgh-made art in the streets, coffeehouses and a warehouse in Brooklyn

NEXTpittsburgh's August gallery guide highlights a wave of Pittsburgh-made art appearing in streets, coffeehouses, open studios, and even a warehouse in Brooklyn. Featured exhibitions include the Pittsburgh Photography Club's 140-year retrospective at Manos Gallery, Monica Matthews' graphite pencil drawings at Ruckus Coffee Gallery & Café, the juried group show "Living Canvas III" at Studio 4, Kristin Divers' pastel solo show at Mark Rengers Gallery, the multimedia group exhibition "Horizons" at Castle Consortia, and Annie Heisey's paintings at Sweetwater Center for the Arts. The month also includes a one-night solo show by New Orleans muralist Dago at Studio 4.

Public Images Gallery opens on Route 66

Public Images Gallery, a new art space owned by Larry White, opens on Route 66 in Tulsa at 1507 E. 11th Street, next to Ike’s Chili. Its inaugural exhibition, “Roots, Rock, and Rebels ... The Photography of Henry Diltz,” features the work of renowned rock photographer Henry Diltz. An abridged version of this show was previously held at the Woody Guthrie Center in Tulsa in 2019 but was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The grand opening takes place on May 1 from 4 to 10 p.m., with Diltz appearing in person during First Friday festivities.

Tender Ground exhibit explores vulnerability and environment

The Hook Experiment in Oxford is currently hosting "Tender Ground," a lens-based exhibition featuring the work of four regional women artists: Lynda Schmid, Sarah R. Bloom, Marnie Ellen Hertzler, and Jonna McKone. Curated by Constance McBride and Lisa Baird, the show utilizes photography and found objects to explore themes of environmental instability, physical vulnerability, and the fragility of place. The works range from disjointed equine photography and nude self-portraiture in decaying spaces to documentation of the disappearing Tangier Island.

Plum Bottom Hosts Outdoor Art Show

Plum Bottom Gallery in Egg Harbor, Wisconsin, will host its annual outdoor art show on Memorial Day weekend, May 23–24, 2025, from 11 am to 4 pm. The event features sculpture, glass, painting, jewelry, and mixed media works by a roster of nationally collected artists, with featured artists Sue Pruss, Rose Kleman, and Curtis Hall appearing on Saturday. The gallery has also recently added Wisconsin-based photographer Tommy Nigbor to its artist roster, known for his minimalist landscapes and rural scenes.

The South River fire’s quiet toll on Atlanta’s printmakers

A fire at South River Art Studios in Atlanta on November 12 destroyed or damaged over 50 works in "En Masse," a group exhibition of 21 regional printmakers that had opened just 11 days earlier in the Gogo Gallery. Curator Chloe Alexander and artists Maurice Evans, Grace Kisa, and Jamaal Barber describe the loss of unique, irreplaceable prints due to soot, smoke, and water damage, with many pieces on paper rendered unsalvageable despite appearing intact.

Rainforest-inspired works on show at Uki café-post office

Local artist Brenda Bryant has unveiled her latest exhibition, "Shadows and Light," at the Bastion Lane Espresso Bar in Uki. The collection features eight oil and pastel paintings inspired by the Gondwana rainforest and the remnants of the Big Scrub in Australia's Northern Rivers region. Bryant’s work utilizes a soft, misty aesthetic to capture the atmospheric tranquility of the forest, occasionally incorporating fantastical elements influenced by J.R.R. Tolkien.

Fort Worth Contemporary Arts to Open New Location in September

Fort Worth Contemporary Arts (FWCA), the contemporary art gallery of Texas Christian University (TCU), will open a new 2,000-square-foot location at 3050 Waits Avenue in September 2025, one block from its former site. The inaugural exhibition on September 5 will be "Indian Removal Act III: We are a Wounding" by San Antonio artist Joe Harjo, a member of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation of Oklahoma, continuing his series on Native American historical and contemporary issues. The previous location at 2900 W. Berry Street closed in November 2024 after a final memorial exhibition honoring influential faculty member Dr. Frances Colpitt, as the university repurposes the site for student housing under an $83 million development plan.

New gallery in Garnethill to celebrate Glasgow's street art and graffiti scene

A new gallery called Grateful Gallery is opening at 50 Hill Street in Glasgow's Garnethill neighborhood, founded by artists Ciaran Globel and Panda McGlone. The public opening is set for Friday, June 6, 2025. The duo, who have been friends since 2006, aim to create a welcoming space dedicated to Glasgow's street art and graffiti scene. The gallery will sell affordable prints, merchandise, and artwork from local street artists, with a rotating monthly floor show; the inaugural exhibition, titled "Friends," runs from June 6 to July 3. The space has been renovated with community help, and a crowdfunder raised nearly £12,000 from over 300 supporters.

The Castello di Sammezzano, a Moorish-style castle near Florence, Italy, is set for a major revival. Built in the 19th century by the Marquis Ferdinando Panciatichi Ximenes d'Aragona, the castle is one of Italy's most important examples of Orientalist architecture, featuring over sixty uniquely decorated rooms, a monumental park, and rare botanical species. After decades of neglect, auctions, and sporadic openings, the property was purchased in 2025 by the family of entrepreneur Giorgio Moretti, who plans a €50 million restoration. The first phase will focus on rehabilitating the historic gardens, with work beginning in June 2026.

Madras art gallery celebrates four decades with local artists showcase

The Art Adventure Gallery in Madras, Oregon, is celebrating its 40th anniversary on May 7th with a special event from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The gallery opened in 1986 after a Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce art show revealed strong community interest but no permanent exhibition space. The anniversary event will showcase work from local artists, including the Tananáwit artist community of Warm Springs, and the first 40 attendees will receive free ice cream in hand-made ceramic bowls.
