Artist Raili Jänese, an Estonian-born painter now based in Kirkland, Washington, creates colorful acrylic works that capture everyday human and animal behaviors with humor and tenderness. Her practice, which began after a corporate career, focuses on observation of mundane moments—people eating, drinking coffee, riding transit, and animals in urban settings. Her upcoming solo exhibition, "E.L.U," will be on view at Ryan James Fine Arts from May 1–31, 2025, with a Gallery Night on May 22. Jänese has shown work regionally at venues including Happy Time Studio Gallery, Oxbow Montlake, and the Seattle Art Fair, and has completed public art projects in Bellevue, Kent, Kirkland, and Seattle.
AOY Art Center announced the award winners of its 14th Annual Juried Show, with David Orban taking first place for his oil on cradled wood panel, “Bi-plane and Blue Truck in Red.” Juror Amanda C. Burdan, senior curator at the Brandywine Museum, selected the piece for its surreal use of red. Second place went to Jean Burdick for “Silverton,” a silkscreen on vellum, and third place to Darlene Decker for “For the Monarchs,” an oil painting. The Frumi Cohen Memorial Award was presented to Cathy Hanville for her photograph “What’s for Dinner,” and honorable mentions were awarded to Scott Hoerl and Barbara Kaiser. The exhibition, featuring 135 works from over 425 entries by 150 local artists, is on view through May 3 at the AOY Art Center in Yardley, Pennsylvania, and online.
Queensborough Community College Art Gallery held an opening reception for its 2026 Juried Student art exhibit on April 21. The annual show, which began in 2011, features between 87 and 100 works selected as the "best of the best" from students in the Art and Design Department, with the pieces remaining on view through May 29.
Arkansas Tech University's Department of Art is presenting "Proof of Process," an exhibition featuring the graphic design work of its senior students. The show is on view at the Norman Hall Art Gallery on campus until May 1, with a free public reception scheduled for April 23.
Artist Andy Gillis of Troy will present an exhibition titled "The art of dots in acrylic," featuring his intricate mandala paintings, at the Starworks Cafe and Taproom in Star. The show opens with a free reception on April 30 and will remain on view through July 30.
Hesston College announced the winners of its 2026 Juried Student Art Exhibit. Top honors went to Constance Feldt for her ceramic tile triptych "Tomorrow," Anna Franco for a graphite drawing, Elsa Rayneau for a watercolor, and Evelyn Gaertner for a stoneware teapot. The exhibit is on view through May 1 at the Regier-Friesen Gallery.
