A block of 15th Street NW in Washington, DC, where renowned abstract painter Alma Thomas (1891-1978) lived for most of her life, has been renamed “Alma Thomas Way.” The street signs now stand at the corners of 15th and Church streets and 15th and Q streets, bookending the house at 1530 15th Street NW that her parents purchased in 1907. The renaming follows a bill introduced by District Councilmembers Christina Henderson and Brooke Pinto, who led a ceremony to honor the artist. Henderson stated the goal is to “elevate and introduce local heroes to folks for the next generation.”
Artists Elliot Twelvetrees and Daniel Snouffer have opened a new gallery called Art Haus Unlimited in Columbus, Ohio, located at 765 Summit St. in a historic building. The gallery features fine art and photography by Twelvetrees, Snouffer, Colin Dearth, and Tamera Bryant. Twelvetrees, an abstract painter and former interior designer, and Snouffer, an award-winning photographer and designer, launched the space in November 2025, with Twelvetrees returning to the very studio she once used. The gallery participates in the Short North Gallery Hop and hosts events like Twilight Soirées with live music to create an inviting atmosphere.
Abstract Expressionist painter Tom Wilson Jones is the subject of a new exhibition at Larkin Gallery in Provincetown, Massachusetts. The show runs through June 9, with an opening reception on May 22. Jones, a Louisville native now living in Harwich Port, studied under Robert Henry, Bill Steeves, and at the Royal Museum of Brussels School.
Abstract artist Mollie Jackson is the subject of a commissioned display titled "Catharsis" at the NoBo Art Center, running through May 23. The exhibition features large-scale, expressive abstract paintings that Jackson describes as immersive and emotionally cathartic. A special workshop, "Making Emotions Visible," will be held on May 16 in conjunction with the show. Jackson, who will also be the summer 2026 artist-in-residence at the Firehouse Art Center, discusses her process-oriented approach, her background as the daughter of an abstract painter, and her belief that abstract art connects viewers to emotion rather than representation.
