shakespeare folios sothebys london auction

Sotheby's London will auction a rare set of all four Shakespeare Folios—the First (1623), Second (1632), Third (1663), and Fourth (1685)—as a single lot on May 23, with a presale estimate of £3.5–4.5 million ($4.7–5.99 million). The set, assembled in 2016, is led by the First Folio, which preserved 18 of Shakespeare's plays that might otherwise have been lost. The sale marks the first time all four volumes have been offered together since a 1989 Sotheby's New York auction, which was canceled after a private offer was accepted.

Rarely seen Walter Sickert painting to go on sale in London

A rarely seen Walter Sickert painting, *Ennui* (1913), will be offered for sale in a selling exhibition at Piano Nobile gallery in London on 26 September. The work, once owned by Hollywood actor Edward G. Robinson and later by collectors Herbert and Ann Lucas, has not been publicly exhibited since 2001. Priced around £750,000, it is one of five versions Sickert painted in the 1910s depicting a pub landlord and his wife; three are held by British institutions including the Royal Collection and the Ashmolean Museum. The sale also includes a Sickert pastel of a sex worker unseen since 1908, plus works from his Dieppe period.

Rediscovered Old Master Painting Eclipses Estimate at Auction

A rediscovered portrait of Prince Rupert, long attributed to the studio of Anthony van Dyck and later to Jacob Huysmans, sold for CA$217,250 ($153,000) at Heffel Fine Art Auction House’s Spring Sale on May 21, more than double its low estimate. New research identified the work as by Peter Lely, court painter to King Charles II. The painting had belonged to the Hudson Bay Company for centuries and was part of a court-approved sale of the company’s collection following its 2024 bankruptcy. The 80-lot sale also saw a record for E.J. Hughes’s "Coastal Boats Near Sidney, BC" (1948), which sold for CA$5.7 million ($4.1 million), and strong results for Group of Seven artists Arthur Lismer, A.J. Casson, and Lawren Harris.

Rediscovered Artemisia Gentileschi painting offered for sale in London for £1m to £2m

Sotheby's will offer a rediscovered Artemisia Gentileschi painting, *David with the Head of Goliath* (1620s-30s), at its Old Master evening auction on 2 July, with an estimate of £1m to £2m. The work had been misattributed for decades—first to Giovanni Francesco Guerrieri in 1975, then as 'School of Caravaggio' in 2018—before definitive attribution to Artemisia was confirmed in 2020 when Simon Gillespie Studio discovered her signature running down the sword blade. The painting has been on the market only twice before, most recently selling for €104,000 in 2018.
