Miami Beach’s Bass Museum picks architect for new pavilion

The Bass Museum of Art in Miami Beach has appointed the Los Angeles-based architecture firm Johnston Marklee to design a new 22,000-square-foot pavilion. The expansion, funded in part by a $20.1 million municipal bond, will occupy a site currently used for parking and will feature an elevated gallery designed to withstand South Florida’s environmental challenges, alongside an outdoor patio and performance stage.

This article from Artnet News compiles a list of notable accidents in museums, where visitors, children, or even curators have inadvertently damaged valuable artworks and artifacts. The article is framed as a lighthearted yet cautionary look at the fragility of museum objects and the human errors that lead to their damage.

4000 year old greek vase smashed

A museum visitor at the Heraklion Archaeological Museum on Crete tripped and fell, grabbing a 4,000-year-old Minoan vase to break her fall and completely shattering the artifact. The Greek Culture Ministry reported the visitor suffered minor leg injuries, but restorers are optimistic and believe the vase could be back on display as soon as today. The vase had previously been repaired in antiquity, suggesting it was also damaged thousands of years ago.
