The Bass Museum of Art in Miami Beach has appointed the Los Angeles-based architecture firm Johnston Marklee to design a new 22,000-square-foot pavilion. The expansion, funded in part by a $20.1 million municipal bond, will occupy a site currently used for parking and will feature an elevated gallery designed to withstand South Florida’s environmental challenges, alongside an outdoor patio and performance stage.
The Ayala Foundation has announced the development of the Kontempo Center for Contemporary Art in Manila, appointing Reuben Keehan as its inaugural artistic director. Designed by architect Kulapat Yantrasast of WHY Architecture in collaboration with Lor Calma & Partners, the center will be located on the site of a former racetrack in Circuit Makati. The facility will prioritize exhibitions, commissions, and public programming over a permanent collection, featuring three large galleries and extensive green space for public art installations.
The University of California, Irvine (UCI) has acquired the Orange County Museum of Art (OCMA) and will merge it with the UC Irvine Jack and Shanaz Langson Institute and Museum of California Art (Langson IMCA). The combined institution will be renamed the UC Irvine Langson Orange County Museum of Art. UCI will oversee OCMA's 53,000-square-foot, $98 million facility in Costa Mesa, California, and integrate its 4,500-object collection with approximately 9,000 works from the Irvine Museum Collection and the Gerald Buck Collection. Previously planned programming at both venues is expected to continue through 2026, and a national search is underway for an executive director to lead the new museum.
Art galleries and museums across the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Qatar have shuttered their physical spaces following a series of Iranian missile strikes targeting the Arabian Gulf. Major institutions including the Jameel Arts Centre and commercial galleries like Lawrie Shabibi and The Third Line have moved operations online or closed entirely as the UAE government advises residents to remain at home. The regional instability follows a cycle of retaliatory strikes between Iran and US-Israeli forces, resulting in casualties within the UAE.
Feria Material, a satellite art fair to Mexico City's Zona Maco, is moving its venue just six weeks before its February 5–8 edition. The fair will relocate from Expo Reforma to Maravilla Studios, a renovated historic factory in Colonia Atlampa, because Expo Reforma is hosting "Stranger Things: The Experience," a Netflix immersive activation, through the end of February. Material cofounder Brett W. Schultz told ARTnews that the fair exhausted all options to stay at Expo Reforma but faced limited venue options and skyrocketing rental prices in Mexico City. Maravilla Studios offered a similar price and features a single-level layout with high ceilings, polished concrete floors, and outdoor spaces, which the fair's production team sees as an improvement over the previous two-floor, carpeted venue.
The Mike Kelley Foundation for the Arts (MKFA) has announced the recipients of its 2026 Infinite Expansion Grants (IEG), awarding funding to nine contemporary arts organizations across Los Angeles County. This year marks the tenth anniversary of the grant program, with six of the nine organizations receiving MKFA funding for the first time. The grantees include Art in the Park, Clockshop, and Color Compton, among others, each undertaking projects that explore themes of place, memory, diaspora, and community resilience through exhibitions, installations, and public programming. The grants were selected by a jury of five arts professionals including Tiffany Barber, Jibz Cameron, Justen Leroy, Jenny Lin, and Rodrigo Valenzuela.
The Art Dealers Association of America (ADAA) has launched a digital guide on Bloomberg Connects, a free arts and culture app developed by Bloomberg Philanthropies. The guide aggregates information on more than 200 member galleries across the United States, including exhibition listings, public programs, archival material, an interactive map, weekly openings, and interviews. The ADAA becomes one of the first national gallery associations to consolidate its programming on the platform, which already hosts guides from over 1,100 cultural organizations worldwide, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, Storm King Art Center, and the Hammer Museum.
