gunther uecker zero artist dead

Günther Uecker, the German postwar artist known for hammering nails into canvases to create abstract works, died at age 95. His death was announced by his New York gallery, Lévy Gorvy Dayan, after he had been hospitalized in Düsseldorf. Uecker was a core member of the avant-garde ZERO group, founded in 1957 by Otto Piene and Heinz Mack, and his nail-based abstractions—applied to surfaces from canvases to lightboxes and TV sets—defined his practice from the 1950s onward. He participated in major exhibitions including Documenta and MoMA's 1965 "The Responsive Eye," and continued working daily in his Düsseldorf studio into his 90s.

saul dennison art new museum chairman dead at 96

Saul Dennison, a prominent arts patron and longtime supporter of the New Museum in New York, died on September 11 at age 96. Dennison and his wife Ellyn, who died earlier this year, were avid art collectors whose holdings ranged from new media and photography to classical sculpture and conceptual works. Dennison served as president of the New Museum's board of trustees from 1999 to 2013, then as chairman until his death, and was instrumental in the museum's 2007 opening of its permanent home on the Bowery. He also helped the museum secure a crucial challenge grant from philanthropist Vera List by suggesting artworks be accepted as donations toward the fundraising goal.

Shigeo Toya, 1947–2026

Japanese sculptor Shigeo Toya died of pneumonia in Tokyo on April 15, 2026, at age 78. Known for his conceptual approach, Toya spent five decades redefining sculpture beyond Western frameworks, creating works such as *Bamboo Grove II* (1975), the *Woods* series (shown at the 1988 Venice Biennale), and the *Minimal Baroque* series.
