Gozo Yoshimasu has been awarded the inaugural Serpentine x FLAG Art Foundation Prize, a new biennial award providing £200,000 per recipient over ten years, totaling £1 million in artist support. The jury included Michelle Kuo, Venus Lau, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Jonathan Rider, and Rirkrit Tiravanija. Yoshimasu, born in Tokyo in 1939, is known for his interdisciplinary practice spanning poetry, performance, photography, and experimental moving image. As part of the prize, he will stage a solo exhibition at Serpentine North in autumn 2027, traveling to The FLAG Art Foundation in New York in spring 2028—his first major solo institutional presentations in Europe and the United States.
Kyle Stephan has been appointed the new Steven and Lisa Munster Tananbaum Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at The Block Museum at Northwestern University. A curator, scholar, and educator with expertise in global contemporary art, time-based media, and interdisciplinary practice, Stephan was inspired to pursue curatorial work after witnessing art's power to activate people and communities while working as a studio manager for artist Lynn Hershman Leeson in the 1990s San Francisco Bay Area. She holds a Ph.D. in art and art history from Stanford University and previously curated the first U.S. survey of Fluxus artist Wolf Vostell at Harvard Art Museums.
Pi Li, former head of art at Hong Kong's Tai Kwun, has been appointed the founding director of the new Róng Museum in Shenzhen. The museum, focusing on 20th and 21st-century global creative practices across visual art, design, performance, architecture, and digital media, is scheduled to open in the second half of 2027 as part of the M80 lifestyle complex.
Iranian-born artist Omid Asadi has been appointed as the new artist-in-residence at the University of Salford’s Energy House 2.0 research facility. Running from Spring 2026 through the end of the year, the residency will see Asadi collaborate with researchers at the world-leading climate laboratory, which features two massive chambers capable of simulating extreme global weather conditions. The artist plans to create new installations and sculptures in response to the facility's pioneering retrofit research, specifically focusing on a recreated 1930s-era house.
