The Minnesota Museum of American Art in St. Paul has opened “Queering Indigeneity,” a new exhibition curated by artist Penny Kagigebi and supporting curator Ben Gessner. Featuring works by 16 queer and two-spirit Indigenous artists, the show includes a birch bark basket by Kagigebi that retells an Ojibwe story about two-spirit ancestors, a glass mosaic by Sharon Day, beaded soundwave portraits by Ryan Young, and an abstract quilt by Delia Touché. Grammy-winning jazz percussionist Pete Escovedo, father of Sheila E., unveiled his latest art exhibition, "The California Art Tour (Oakland chapter)," at The Grand Gallery in Oakland on July 17, 2025. The event doubled as a celebration of his 90th birthday. The exhibit features abstract paintings of faces, primarily women, in vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows, including a self-portrait from 2003 on loan from his private collection. Escovedo, who began painting as a student at McClymond's High School, attended the reception with family members, including his son Juan Escovedo, and longtime friends.
Three women—Tarot Crick, Penny Bowley, and Rhiannon Griffiths—opened a new art gallery called Jackdaw in Oundle, Northamptonshire, in March 2025. The gallery exclusively sells artwork created by artists based within 50 miles of the shop, aiming to showcase local talent that the owners describe as 'phenomenal' but underrecognized. On May 7, the community gathered at Jodi House Gallery for a reception and awards ceremony hosted by Santa Barbara Channelkeeper, celebrating the 23rd Annual Student Art Show. High school students from Carpinteria to Goleta submitted 120 pieces interpreting the Santa Barbara Channel, with 50 selected for the show. Awards were juried by Meagan Stirling, Associate Professor of Art at Westmont College. First place went to Aricin Marshall for his ceramic sculpture *Tide Bound – Hollister Ranch*, second to Josefa Olivio for *Channel Islands Fox*, and third to Jocabed Carranza for *After the Tide*. The Environmental Ethic Award was given to Maria Rojo for *Insufferable Freedom*, and the Juror’s Choice Award to Madeline Adler for *Sea Life vs. Pollution: The Ongoing Battle*. Honorable mentions included Sophia Lam, Alejandro Miranda, and Camila Sandoval.
