‘We’ve faced immense new pressures’: Shanghai museum director on the challenges—and benefits—of going free entry

Shanghai’s Rockbund Art Museum (RAM) became one of the only private museums in China to offer free admission in May 2025, marking its 15th anniversary. The move initially required pre-booked timed entry via WeChat, but after city-wide guidance encouraged removing barriers, the museum eliminated the booking system, leading to long wait times and visitor complaints on social media. One visitor reported receiving an inappropriate response from the museum’s official account, prompting apologies from both the museum and its executive director and chief curator, X Zhu-Nowell. A hybrid system of day-ahead reservations and same-day walk-ins was later implemented.

Art Gallery of Hamilton is now free to visit for the rest of the summer

The Art Gallery of Hamilton (AGH) has announced free admission for all visitors during July and August 2025 as part of a new initiative called "Hamilton Strong." The program aims to support community health and wellbeing by providing a space for healing, reflection, and connection amid financial insecurity and political anxiety. Free entry is funded by a private donor and applies during regular business hours, though the gallery remains closed on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. Current exhibitions include Helen McNicoll: An Impressionist Journey, Taking Root: Recent Acquisitions, and The Shape of Curiosity, along with the Zucker Sculpture Garden and AGH Creative Lab. Members receive a two-month extension, and new memberships purchased in July or August come with two extra months.

The first section of Berlin's Pergamon Museum will reopen to the public on June 4, 2027, after years of renovation. The Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation (SPK) announced the date, ending months of uncertainty. The museum has been completely closed since autumn 2023 for comprehensive refurbishment, and the reopening will finally make the famous Pergamon Altar accessible again. However, the south wing, housing the Ishtar Gate and Babylonian Processional Way, will remain closed until 2037, with full museum access expected that year.

The papal residence of Castel Gandolfo had been opened to museum visits by Pope Francis, now Pope Leo closes it again

La residenza papale di Castel Gandolfo era stata aperta a visite museali da Papa Francesco, ora Papa Leone la chiude di nuovo

Pope Leo XIV is closing the Apostolic Palace of Castel Gandolfo to the public as of July 2026, ending nearly a decade of museum access initiated by Pope Francis. Online ticket sales stop on June 30, and the palace will revert to its original function as the pope's summer residence. The decision follows preparatory works begun in May 2025 and is partly motivated by security concerns, as the current temporary lodging at Villa Barberini has logistical and access-control issues.

Turin experiments with a robot guide in one of its historic palaces

Turin expérimente un robot-guide dans l’un de ses palais historiques

The Palazzo Madama in Turin, Italy, has introduced R1, a humanoid robot guide developed by the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Genoa, to accompany visitors through the historic palace. Since late March, R1 has been testing its ability to navigate the building's constrained interiors, interact with diverse audiences, and provide explanations about artworks, artists, and the palace's history. The robot uses infrared cameras, lasers, pressure sensors, and a LED matrix to move, avoid obstacles, and communicate, with over 80% of users reporting positive interactions during the six-week trial. Previous tests occurred in 2022 and May 2024.
