Wendy Hitchmough’s new biography, *Vanessa Bell: The Life and Art of a Bloomsbury Radical*, argues that Vanessa Bell (1879–1961) was a central figure in 20th-century visual culture, both as an artist and designer. The book details how Bell navigated sexism through collaboration and anonymity, with works like *Dancing Couple* only attributed to her in 1999. Hitchmough, a former curator of Charleston, presents Bell’s life with a matter-of-fact tone, weaving in the complex personal and professional entanglements of the Bloomsbury Group, including her relationships with Clive Bell, Roger Fry, and Molly MacCarthy.

Collection

An exhibition titled "Alphonse Mucha, Master of Art Nouveau Selections from the Dwahan Collection" will run from December 9, 2025, to March 14, 2026. It features 75 works by Alphonse Mucha, including rare original lithographs, proofs, drawings, a pastel, books, posters, portfolios, and ephemera, drawn from the Dhawan Collection in Los Angeles, one of the finest private collections of Mucha's work in the United States. The exhibition is organized by Landau Traveling Exhibitions and offers free admission.

A century of Art Deco celebrated at Sarasota Art Museum

Sarasota Art Museum will present "Art Deco: The Golden Age of Illustration" from August 31, 2025, through March 29, 2026, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the style's debut at the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris. The exhibition features 100 rare posters from the 1920s and 1930s drawn from the William W. Crouse Collection, one of the world's most important private collections of Art Deco posters, with works by artists including A. M. Cassandre, Leonetto Cappiello, and Paul Colin. Alongside the posters, the show includes sculptural pieces, vintage cocktail shakers, and furniture from The Wolfsonian-Florida International University, highlighting the luxurious materials and modern design of the Machine Age.
