Candidates Announced for the 2026 Cannes Film Festival (Again No Italians, Just Like at the Biennale)

The 79th edition of the Cannes Film Festival has unveiled its official selection for 2026, scheduled to run from May 12 to 23. Led by President Iris Knobloch and General Delegate Thierry Frémaux, the festival will open with Pierre Salvadori’s 'La Vénus électrique,' a romantic comedy set in 1928 Paris centered on a painter who loses his inspiration. The competition lineup features a global array of heavyweights, including new works by Pedro Almodóvar, Ryusuke Hamaguchi, Hirokazu Kore-eda, and Asghar Farhadi.

Japan’s Yokohama Triennale has appointed Cosmin Costinaș and Inti Guerrero as co-artistic directors for its 9th edition, opening at the Yokohama Museum of Art on April 23, 2027. Costinaș, a Romanian writer and critic currently senior curator at Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin, will become a curatorial adviser there at year’s end. Guerrero, from Bogotá, is a professor at City University in Hong Kong. The duo previously co-directed the 2024 Biennale of Sydney and the 2018 Dak’Art Biennale, and have collaborated on several other projects. They were selected from 22 candidates by a six-person international committee.

Liu Ding and Carol Yinghua Lu to curate 2027 Istanbul Biennial

The Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (ISKV) has announced that Liu Ding and Carol Yinghua Lu will curate the 2027 Istanbul Biennial. Liu Ding is a Beijing-based artist and curator who has participated in numerous international biennials and taught at NABA Milan, while Carol Yinghua Lu is an art historian and director of the Inside-Out Art Museum in Beijing, with a background at OCAT Shenzhen, Museion Bolzano, and Asia Art Archive. The pair, who have collaborated since 2007, most recently served as artistic directors of the 2024 Yokohama Triennale. The 19th edition of the Istanbul Biennial is scheduled for 18 September to 14 November 2027.
