Longtime Charleston artist and educator Leo Twiggs has opened a new downtown gallery called the Twiggs Gallery, described as a 'space where everyone is welcome.' The gallery, located on King Street, will showcase Twiggs's own work alongside that of other regional artists, with an emphasis on community engagement and accessibility.
Eleven graduating studio art and visual culture students at Bates College are preparing to debut their year-long thesis projects in the professional exhibition "At the Table." Opening April 17 at the Bates Museum of Art, the show features a diverse range of media including charcoal drawing, photography, and sculpture. The students have spent two semesters transitioning from theoretical research and material exploration to the physical production and professional framing of their works under the guidance of faculty and museum staff.
The Alliance for the Arts has launched its 40th Annual All Florida Exhibition, featuring 43 artworks selected from over 450 submissions across the state. Juried by Tim Jaeger, the director and chief curator of galleries at Ringling College, the exhibition showcases a diverse range of media including hyper-realist paintings, abstract works, and free-standing sculptures. The selected pieces by 39 different artists explore cohesive themes of identity, history, and place.
The Krannert Art Museum has opened "Memorias de la Mujer Lotina: Arpilleras, Women, and Coal in Chile," an exhibition featuring 23 arpilleras created by women from the coal-mining community of Lota. These colorful, hand-stitched textiles, which rose to prominence as a form of resistance during the Pinochet dictatorship, document the daily lives, heritage, and struggles of marginalized communities. The show features a centerpiece 16-foot-long collective textile created by 52 women ranging in age from 14 to 92, depicting scenes of labor, domestic life, and social activism.
Thomasville Center for the Arts has announced two signature early summer events. On June 1, the Center will host "A Seat at the Table," a quarterly community dinner featuring welcome drinks, a shared meal in the Main Gallery, and dessert in the Founder's Gallery, with catering by local favorite Woodstack BBQ. On June 4, the opening reception of "200 for 200: The Collective Exhibition" will take place, a juried show featuring 200 works by members of The Collective, honoring Thomas County's bicentennial and the Center's 40th anniversary. The exhibition runs through August 8, 2026, and is guest juried by Amber Moore, Curator at The Arts Center of Moultrie.
