The sixth edition of Upstate Art Weekend (UAW) launched with a party at Assembly in Kingston, New York, founded by Helen Toomer in 2020. Bruno Bischofberger, the influential Swiss art dealer, collector, and historian, died on Saturday at age 86. He opened his first galleries in Zurich and St. Moritz in 1963, championed American Pop artists like Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, and became an early backer of Jean-Michel Basquiat, representing him from 1982. Bischofberger also helped found Interview magazine with Peter Brant and was a longtime exhibitor at Art Basel.
Art historian Dieter Buchhart, a leading expert on Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring, will debut a new Basquiat exhibition titled “Signs: Connecting Past and Future” at the Dongdaemun Design Plaza in Seoul, opening September 23 and running through January 31, 2026. In a recent interview with Jing Daily, Buchhart discussed the growing convergence of branding, fashion, and art, highlighting the role of luxury companies like LVMH in underwriting major exhibitions, citing their sponsorship of the 2023 show “Basquiat x Warhol. Painting 4 Hands” without special requests, though the exhibition premiered at LVMH’s Fondation Louis Vuitton.
The exhibition “Our Friend, Jean” returns to Brooklyn this May at The Bishop Gallery, coinciding with Frieze Week. The show features twenty artworks alongside personal ephemera and photographs from Jean-Michel Basquiat’s formative years between 1979 and 1980, primarily sourced from the collection of his former roommate Alexis Adler. This iteration includes previously unseen items from Adler’s trove, such as hand-painted garments and postcards, and will be activated by panels featuring Basquiat’s early collaborators.
