Art Toronto gives Latin American artists pride of place with new curated section

Art Toronto, Canada’s largest art fair, returns for its 26th edition (23–26 October) at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre with over 100 galleries. It debuts Arte Sur, a new curated section focused on Latin American art, organized by Mexico City-based curator and gallerist Karen Huber. The section features 11 galleries from across the Americas, including first-time participants from New York, Mexico City, Argentina, and Chile, showcasing more than 30 artists primarily from Mexico, Costa Rica, Argentina, Chile, and Peru.

Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, a top European art collector and founder of a Turin-based foundation, is partnering with New York's New Museum for a series of commissions. The first commission will be realized by Italian artist Diego Marcon, known for his uncanny videos, with his work titled 'Krapfen'—a musical dance film blending American animation and Italian opera. The New Museum, currently undergoing a renovation and expansion with a seven-story annex, is set to reopen this fall. 'Krapfen' was also co-commissioned by Chicago's Renaissance Society, Paris's Lafayette Anticipations, and the Vega Foundation, run by Canadian collector Elisa Nuyten, and will debut at the Renaissance Society before its New Museum run.

National Gallery of Canada receives gift of 61 works valued at $16.8m

Canadian collector and businessman Bob Rennie has donated 61 works valued at C$22.8 million ($16.8 million) to the National Gallery of Canada (NGC) in Ottawa. The gift, which took 18 months to plan, includes pieces by Yinka Shonibare, Mona Hatoum, Rodney Graham, Ai Weiwei, and others. It surpasses Rennie’s previous record donation of C$13 million in 2017 and brings his total contributions to the NGC to over C$35 million, comprising more than 260 works since 2012. Rennie, a longtime patron of the National Gallery of Canada Foundation, emphasized his approach of collecting artists in depth rather than for momentary sensation.
