Two Museums Take on Performative Masculinity, Looksmaxxing, Incels, and Other Macho Buzzwords That Don’t Belong There.

The Stedelijk Museum and Kunstmuseum St. Gallen have co-organized an exhibition titled "Beyond the Manosphere: Masculinities Today," which aims to critically examine contemporary masculinity and its online manifestations such as incels, looksmaxxing, and pickup artists. The show features works by artists including Reba Maybury and Richard Serra, and is curated by Melanie Bühler, with directors Rein Wolfs and Gianni Jetzer overseeing the project. The exhibition will travel from the Stedelijk to the Kunstmuseum St. Gallen later this year.

Nina Wakeford, artist and curator of the Swiss Pavilion at the 2026 Venice Biennale, discusses the pavilion's project "The Unfinished Business of Living Together." The exhibition draws on two Swiss television broadcasts from 1978 and 1984—Telearena and Agora—in which gay, lesbian, and trans individuals spoke on national television. Rather than treating these as historical artifacts, Wakeford and her team (Gianmaria Andreetta, Luca Beeler, Miriam Laura Leonardi, Lithic Alliance, and Yul Tomatala) reactivate them as points of tension, creating a multimedia environment that explores unresolved issues of coexistence, visibility, and social difference.

THE UNFINISHED BUSINESS OF LIVING TOGETHER AT THE SWISS PAVILION

The Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia has selected the project "The Unfinished Business of Living Together" to represent Switzerland at the 2026 Venice Biennale. Conceived by Gianmaria Andreetta, Luca Beeler, and artist Nina Wakeford, the exhibition utilizes archival television broadcasts from the 1970s and 80s to explore the history of LGBTQ+ visibility and social coexistence. The installation will feature a spatialized video production and garden interventions that reactivate historical media moments to examine how social norms dictate public discourse.
