A long-lost 1970 Harry Bertoia hanging sculpture, commissioned for a mall in Flint, Michigan, has been restored and installed in the atrium of General Motors’ new global headquarters in Detroit. The 26-foot-tall work, made of brazed steel rods in Bertoia's signature "sunlit straw" technique, was discovered in 2017 in the basement of a demolished mall, damaged and covered in dust. The city of Southfield purchased it, and after extensive restoration, it now hangs in GM’s Hudson’s Detroit building.

Hannan Center art festival celebrates 100 years of ‘life, even when you mature’

The Hannan Center in Detroit has opened its 2025 Emerge! Art Festival, a juried exhibition featuring 98 artists aged 55 and older and 175 artworks in various media, including sculptures, pottery, and fiber art. The festival runs through January 14 at the Ellen Kayrod Gallery and coincides with the center's 100th anniversary, celebrated under the theme “100 Years Unbound: The Power of Aging.” The center also opened a historical exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum and will host its 70 Over Seventy Awards honoring community contributors aged 70 and older.

City of Detroit's arts and culture office hosts student gallery for its headquarters opening

Detroit's Office of Arts, Culture and Entrepreneurship (ACE) opened its new headquarters at the Butzel Family Recreation Center on May 16, 2025, featuring a student gallery with about 50 works of colorful and thematic art. The exhibition was curated from submissions solicited by ACE project manager Lacey Holmes from schools, art teachers, and community organizations across Detroit.
