Lee Ufan: ‘I try to bring together those things which are made and unmade’

Lee Ufan, the South Korean artist and founding member of the Mono-ha movement, is being honored with a major solo exhibition at SMAC San Marco Art Centre as an official Collateral Event of the Venice Biennale, marking his 90th year. Simultaneously, a new display of his painting and sculpture opens at Dia Beacon in New York State, and his first show in Portugal opens at Casa e Parque de Serralves in July. In an interview with The Art Newspaper, Ufan discusses his artistic journey, his rejection of the artist's hand, and the influence of seeing a Barnett Newman exhibition at MoMA in 1971, which led him to develop his signature From Point and From Line paintings that use repeated marks to express the passage of time.

A South Korean court acquitted former chief prosecutor Kim Sang-min of violating anti-graft laws by allegedly purchasing a painting attributed to artist Lee Ufan and gifting it to Kim Keon-hee, the wife of former President Yoon Suk-yeol, in exchange for political favors. The court found the prosecution's evidence insufficient to prove the painting was purchased or delivered as a bribe, citing a lack of documentation and the questionable credibility of a key witness.

South Korea's impeached former president Yoon Suk-yeol's wife, Kim Keon-hee, was arrested in August on charges including bribery. A special prosecutor revealed that a painting by renowned artist Lee Ufan is central to the inquiry. Prosecutors allege that former prosecutor Kim Sang-min purchased Lee's work *From Point No. 800298* in 2023 for about $75,000 on behalf of Kim Keon-hee's brother, Kim Jin-woo, and that the painting was given to the former first lady's circle. The transaction is being investigated for possible links to political favors, including Kim Sang-min's bid for a ruling-party nomination and his later appointment as a legal adviser to the National Intelligence Service.
