‘It’s really important that the public is not just a silent witness’: Marina Abramović on her Venice Biennale exhibition

Marina Abramović is the first living female artist to have a solo exhibition at the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice, where her work will be installed alongside the museum's permanent collection. ulay wins case regarding against former collaborator marina abramovic

A Dutch court has ordered performance artist Marina Abramović to pay her former collaborator Ulay (Ulay Laysiepen) over €250,000 ($280,500) for violating a 1999 contract regarding joint works created between 1976 and 1988. The court ruled that Ulay is entitled to 20 percent net royalties on sales of those works, plus €23,000 in legal costs. Ulay had accused Abramović of failing to provide accurate sales statements and making only four payments over 16 years. The case stems from their decade-long artistic and romantic partnership, which ended in 1988 with their famous walk on the Great Wall of China.

Frank Uwe Laysiepen, known as Ulay, has died at age 76 in Ljubljana, Slovenia. The German-born artist was a pioneer of performance art, photography, and body art, best known for his collaborative works with former partner Marina Abramović, including the iconic "Relation Works" series and their 1988 walk along the Great Wall of China. Ulay had been recovering from lymphatic cancer; the cause of death has not been confirmed. He leaves behind the ULAY Foundation in Amsterdam and a project space in Slovenia.

Marina Abramović will have a historic solo exhibition at Venice’s Galleria dell’Accademia in May 2026, during the art biennale. Titled "Transforming Energy," the show first debuted at the Modern Art Museum (MAM) Shanghai in 2024 and is inspired by her 1988 walk across the Great Wall of China with former partner Ulay. Abramović becomes the first living female artist to exhibit solo at the Accademia in its 250-year history, following her 2023 milestone as the first woman with a solo show at London’s Royal Academy of Arts and her 1997 Golden Lion win at the Venice Biennale. Curated by MAM artistic director Shai Baitel in collaboration with the artist, the exhibition will feature historic performances such as Rhythm 0 (1974) and Imponderabilia (1997), alongside newer works incorporating precious stones and a photograph of Pietà (with Ulay) (1983) displayed alongside Titian’s Pietà.
