Feminist art collective Hilma's Ghost, composed of artists Dannielle Tegeder and Sharmistha Ray, inaugurated a 600-square-foot mosaic mural titled "Abstract Futures" at the 42nd Street entrance to the 7 train in Manhattan's Grand Central Station. The unveiling, held during Frieze Week, included a ritual where the artists chanted whispers into the colorful glass artwork to charge it with spiritual energy. The collective, which began working together during lockdown, draws inspiration from Swedish spiritual painter Hilma af Klint and debuted at New York's Armory Show in 2021. The mosaic, commissioned by MTA Arts and Design and fabricated by Miotto Mosaic Art Studios, incorporates symbolism from tarot cards.

Writer and curator Laura Raicovich is organizing a weekend-long festival called the "Circus of Life" in St. Louis, Missouri, taking place October 24–26 at the Big Top circus grounds in the Grand Center Arts District. The event is part of Counterpublic, a triennial civic exhibition founded in 2019 by James McAnally, and will feature artists, writers, theater groups, performers, and activists. Raicovich leads a team of four "ringleaders" including Kenneth Bailey, Galen Gritts, Jeanne van Heeswijk, and Nontsikelelo Mutiti, with additional participants such as Chloë Bass, Hilma's Ghost, and Kameelah Janan Rasheed. The program includes performances by Bread and Puppet Theater, conversations with Roxane Gay and Nermeen Shaikh, workshops, a parade, and communal meals, all free and open to the public.

Elucidating the Esoteric with Hilma's Ghost

The feminist art collective Hilma’s Ghost, founded by artists Dannielle Tegeder and Sharmistha Ray, is reclaiming the role of alternative spiritualities and the occult within art history. Sparked by the 2018 Hilma af Klint retrospective at the Guggenheim, the collective emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic as a research-based project that bridges artmaking with esoteric practices like tarot, witchcraft, and neo-tantric cosmologies. Through workshops and collaborative paintings, the duo explores how women and queer artists have historically been erased from the canon due to their unconventional, mystical methods.

At the Armory Show in New York, psychic medium Sarah Potter is offering tarot card readings at the booth of Chicago's Carrie Secrist Gallery using a deck designed by the feminist art collective Hilma's Ghost. The collective, formed during lockdown by abstract artists Dannielle Tegeder and Sharmistha Ray, created "Abstract Futures Tarot," a series of 78 gouache, ink, and colored pencil paintings inspired by pioneering abstractionist Hilma af Klint and the Rider–Waite tarot deck by Pamela Colman Smith. The works, priced at $4,000 each, are the result of 500 hours of collaborative painting, and the deck is also sold in a limited edition of 300, with 215 already sold.

The Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) has launched an experimental art lending program alongside its new exhibition “Letters for the Future,” created with the artist-organized group Department of Transformation. The show features works by 35 artists, including a print by Kameelah Janan Rasheed and a box of spell jars by the duo Hilma’s Ghost. Twenty artworks—ranging from magnets and banners to prints and original works on paper—are available for patrons to borrow, reviving a BPL initiative from the 1950s and ’60s.
