The Obama Presidential Center in Chicago has unveiled its final cohort of artist commissions ahead of its scheduled opening in June. This group includes high-profile contemporary artists such as Njideka Akunyili Crosby, Jeffrey Gibson, and Lorna Simpson, who will contribute site-specific works ranging from a multi-layered portrait of the Obamas to a 34-foot stainless steel sculpture by Martin Puryear honoring the late John Lewis. These eight artists join a previously announced roster, bringing the total number of new commissions for the 19.3-acre South Side campus to 30.

Seaport Art Walk accepting artist proposals for 2026 exhibition

The Seaport Art Walk in New Bedford, Massachusetts, is now accepting artist proposals for its 2026 edition, which will run from July 9 to October 31, 2026. The juried outdoor exhibition, themed “Good Trouble” in honor of the late Rep. John Lewis and the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, invites submissions of temporary sculptures, murals, or photography exploring civil disobedience, community organizing, and cultural resistance. Proposals are due by February 23, 2026, with stipends ranging from $250 to $2,500 per artwork.

Catherine Muirden has been appointed as the new Chair of the Board of the National Galleries of Scotland, starting 1 November 2025 for a four-year term. Muirden brings extensive experience from the corporate sector, including roles at Barclays, Marks & Spencer, and the John Lewis Partnership, as well as over two decades of arts board service in Scotland, most recently as Vice Chair of Scottish Ballet and previously as Chair of the Fruitmarket Gallery. She succeeds Benny Higgins, who led the board through a period of significant challenges.

Muirden brings extensive experience from corporate roles at Barclays, Marks & Spencer, the John Lewis Partnership, and The Co-operative Group, alongside two decades of arts board service in Scotland, including as Vice Chair of Scottish Ballet and Chair of the Fruitmarket Gallery. She succeeds Benny Higgins, who led the board through a period of significant challenges. Director-General Anne Lyden expressed enthusiasm for working with Muirden to advance The Art Works, a new state-of-the-art facility in North Edinburgh that will serve as a community space, conservation center, and art storage hub, enabling broader public access to Scotland's national collection.
