Calder Gardens, a new $90 million cultural institution in Philadelphia, will open on September 21. Designed by Herzog & de Meuron with gardens by Piet Oudolf, the 18,000-square-foot space will feature rotating displays of Alexander Calder's sculptures without wall labels, thematic exhibitions, or a permanent collection. Developed with philanthropist Joseph Neubauer and supported by the Barnes Foundation, the project is led by Alexander S.C. Rower, the artist's grandson and president of the Calder Foundation, and senior director of programs Juana BerrĂo. The institution aims to prioritize contemplation and personal experience over traditional museum education.
