Glasstire's staff and contributors have compiled their personal "best of" lists for 2025, highlighting standout Texas-based exhibitions, events, and artworks. Notable mentions include Victoria Gonzales' solo show "Stay" at the Moncrief Cancer Institute, curated by Chris Wicker, which explores memory through dreamlike paintings; the exhibition "Feeling Color: Aubrey Williams and Frank Bowling" at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, praised for its bold experimentation with color and texture; the community-driven group show "A Good Gathering" at The Pool in Fort Worth; and the Lorne Michaels Collection exhibition at the Harry Ransom Center, offering an inside look at the Saturday Night Live creator's archive. michael h smith dealer curator artist dead

Michael H. Smith, an artist, dealer, and curator who played a pivotal role in developing Southern California's art scene in the 1970s and '80s, died on October 31 in Santa Barbara at age 80. Smith opened his eponymous gallery in Los Angeles in 1971, later became a partner at the Jack Glenn Gallery, and served as director of the Baxter Art Gallery at Caltech from 1977 to 1982, where he staged exhibitions for artists including Hans Haacke, Richard Tuttle, and Berenice Abbott. He also founded a consultancy for artists, taught at UC Irvine, and worked as a conceptual photographer whose works were exhibited by dealer Craig Krull.

Art News: A Preview Of The Lucas Museum Of Narrative Art and A Roberta Flack Auction at Julien’s

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, a 300,000-square-foot institution designed by Ma Yansong of MAD Architects with Stantec, will open in Los Angeles' Exposition Park on September 22. The 11-acre campus includes a park by Mia Lehrer of Studio-MLA and will feature over 1,200 objects across 30 galleries, showcasing narrative art from ancient sculptures to modern cinema, drawn from the museum's founding collection. Separately, Julien's Auctions will host "Roberta Flack: Style, Art & Music," a no-reserve auction celebrating the singer's life and cultural impact, including her Bösendorfer Imperial Concert Grand Piano.
