Wausau, WI Prepares To Celebrate 50 Years Of ‘Birds In Art’

The Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in Wausau, Wisconsin, is preparing to open the 50th annual 'Birds in Art' exhibition over Labor Day weekend. The show features 102 juried artists from 16 countries, selected from over 700 applicants, and includes paintings, sculptures, and works on paper. Museum director Matt Foss notes that the exhibition has evolved from traditional realism toward more diverse, contemporary interpretations of birds, with artists experimenting with new styles and mediums.

The Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in Wausau, Wisconsin, celebrated the 50th anniversary of its annual "Birds in Art" exhibition in September 2024. The show, the largest in its history, features 142 artworks by 142 artists from 16 countries, including paintings, sculptures, and collages. The exhibition originated in 1976 as "Birds of the Lakes, Fields, and Forests," organized by wildlife artist Owen J. Gromme, and has since become a premier global showcase for modern bird art. This year's selection included 101 works chosen from 1,160 entries, plus 41 pieces by past Master Wildlife Artists from the museum's collection.

Art exhibitions explore Appalachian identity and newcomer experiences

The Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine is launching a dual exhibition featuring "From These Hills" and "Making it in America," opening April 14 in Roanoke. "From These Hills," on loan from the William King Museum of Art and curated by Kathy Foley, showcases contemporary Appalachian art across various media that explore regional identity and memory. Complementing this, photojournalist Heather Rousseau’s "Making it in America" documents the lived experiences of immigrants and refugees in Southwest Virginia, capturing the resilience of Afghan, Ukrainian, and Latino newcomers through five years of visual storytelling.

Organized by the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum to celebrate its 50th anniversary, the showcase features 60 original paintings, sculptures, and graphics by contemporary artists from around the world. The exhibition includes interactive elements and a dedicated reading nook designed to engage visitors of all ages with avian-themed artworks.
