Georgian-Russian artist Zurab Tsereteli has died at age 91. He served as the chief artist of the USSR’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and headed Russia’s Academy of Arts, and was a known supporter of Vladimir Putin. His monumental sculptures, favored by Russian elites, were controversial in his native Georgia.
The Mauritshuis museum in The Hague has announced that Johannes Vermeer's "Girl with a Pearl Earring" will be loaned to the Nakanoshima Museum of Art in Osaka, Japan, for a temporary exhibition this fall. The loan occurs while the Dutch museum undergoes renovations in August and September. The painting was last lent to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam for its 2023 Vermeer retrospective. The Asahi Shimbun Company is underwriting the presentation and will serve as a project partner to the Mauritshuis for four years, funding a new education center slated for 2028.
The Mauritshuis museum in The Hague has reclassified three paintings previously attributed to Rembrandt as copies or studio works: *Portrait of Rembrandt with a Gorget* (ca. 1629), *Study of an Old Man* (ca. 1655–60), and *‘Tronie’ of an Old Man* (ca. 1630). The first was identified as a copy in 1999, the second was found to be by a student despite a genuine signature, and the third may have been painted by a student or Rembrandt himself. The museum now lists 11 works as authentic Rembrandts, including *The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp* (1632), and seven works whose authenticity has been questioned.
A rare 17th-century still life by Dutch Golden Age painter Maria van Oosterwijck sold for €406,400 ($477,000) at Christie’s Paris, nearly three times its high estimate, during the auction of the Stern family collection. The painting, titled *A bunch of fruit, berries and flowers hanging in a niche*, achieved the second highest auction price ever for the artist, who is believed to have produced only about 30 works in her lifetime.
The Mauritshuis museum in The Hague has announced it will lend Johannes Vermeer's "Girl with a Pearl Earring" (around 1665) to the Nakanoshima Museum of Art in Osaka, Japan, this summer. The rare loan is made possible because the Mauritshuis will close from August 24 to September 20 for building alterations. The painting last traveled internationally in 2012-14 for a world tour, and its only recent trip was a short loan to the Rijksmuseum in 2023 for a Vermeer survey exhibition. The exhibition in Osaka will be organized by the Asahi Shimbun, a major Japanese media organization that also sponsored the earlier tour, and will help fund the Mauritshuis's renovations and a new education center.
