Christie's auction house is launching a major sale titled 'Sublime Shadows' in London on June 11, featuring 93 works of South Asian Modern and contemporary art from an anonymous private collection. This marks the auction house's first dedicated South Asian Modern art sale in London since 2019, highlighting a surge in market activity and curatorial interest for the category.
Sotheby’s held a “Modern and Contemporary South Asian Art” auction in London, where seven works by five Bangladeshi masters—Zainul Abedin, Shahid Kabir, Mohammad Kibria, Rashid Choudhury, and Kalidas Karmakar—were sold, exceeding pre-sale estimates. A painting by Zainul Abedin fetched £50,800 against an estimate of £15,000–£20,000, while three works by Shahid Kabir sold for £53,340, far above the £7,500–£9,500 estimate. Artists Shahid Kabir and Kalidas Karmakar appeared at a Sotheby’s auction for the first time, and seven new records were set overall, including for Kabir, Karmakar, Francis Newton Souza, Ganesh Pyne, Laxman Shrestha, Laxman Pai, and Adeela Suleman.
The 14th Kibria Printmaking Fair concluded on May 9 at Kala Kendra in Lalmatia, Bangladesh, as part of a month-long printmaking festival running from May 1 to May 23. The fair brought together printmaking studios and institutions from across the country, alongside works by pioneering late artists Safiuddin Ahmed and Mohammad Kibria. It was inaugurated by artists Rafiqun Nabi and Monirul Islam, with a special exhibition titled "Pioneers of Printmaking" showcasing early works by key figures who established printmaking as a distinct artistic language in Bangladesh. The festival also includes workshops, artist talks, and a forthcoming "Contemporary Printmaking Exhibition" from May 12 to May 23.
