What Makes a Photograph a Photograph? The Photography Show 2026 Offers New Perspectives

The Association of International Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD) has announced the 45th edition of The Photography Show, scheduled to take place at New York’s Park Avenue Armory from April 22–26, 2026. The fair will feature 77 galleries, ranging from long-standing participants like Edwynn Houk Gallery to first-time exhibitors such as Galerie Sophie Scheidecker and Central Server Works. A significant addition to this year's programming is the debut of "Focal Point," a new sector dedicated exclusively to solo presentations that explore the experimental and evolving nature of lens-based media.

Domitilla Dardi's new book "Cucire Universi" (published by Einaudi) presents a counter-history of design, focusing on techniques traditionally dismissed as "feminine" and "minor"—such as sewing, ceramics, cooking, and knitting. The book argues that these practices have been systematically undervalued by official art histories, yet have contributed significantly to technologically advanced research fields. Dardi uses real historical figures like Emily Dickinson to illustrate how women's creative and scientific talents were channeled into these marginalized domains, and she calls for overcoming the dualistic view that separates art from craft.

New Perspectives: "Roy Lichtenstein in the Studio"

The Dallas Museum of Art (DMA) and the Nasher Sculpture Center have jointly opened "Roy Lichtenstein in the Studio," a landmark two-venue exhibition celebrating the pop artist's centennial. Organized by curators Dr. Catherine Craft, Ade Omotosho, and Dr. Emily Friedman, the show features over 50 works gifted by the Roy Lichtenstein Foundation, which is closing its operations. The exhibition marks the first collaboration between the neighboring institutions since "Matisse as Sculptor" nearly 20 years ago, and includes prints, drawings, maquettes, and sculptures that establish Dallas as a study center for Lichtenstein's work.

Kent Monkman Reimagines History Painting At Akron Art Museum

The Akron Art Museum will present "Kent Monkman: History Is Painted by the Victors," a major exhibition of monumental paintings by Cree artist Kent Monkman. Running from April 11 to August 16, 2026, the show reimagines history painting through a subversive, Indigenous lens, confronting colonial narratives and offering new perspectives on the past and present.

Intermezzo: revisiting Helmut Newton

The Helmut Newton Foundation at Berlin's Museum für Fotografie is overhauling its permanent exhibition after more than 20 years, introducing a cinematic installation called "Intermezzo" that uses eight video projectors across four screens to present a film portrait of Helmut Newton. The film incorporates previously unreleased material, including personal recordings by his wife June Newton, and features interviews with figures from Newton's world such as Philippe Garner, Carla Sozzani, and Matthias Harder. Alongside the immersive film, the ground-floor gallery displays nearly 100 of Newton's exhibition posters and launches a new curatorial series, "Spotlight: behind the frame," which will focus on iconic photographs by Helmut Newton or Alice Springs, starting with Newton's 1975 "Rue Aubriot" and Alice Springs' 1970 Gitanes advertisement.
