The Peter Hujar Archive and Foundation has left Pace Gallery and will now be jointly represented by New York-based gallery Ortuzar and Fraenkel Gallery in San Francisco. The archive will continue working with Mai 36 Galerie in Zürich and Maureen Paley in London on select projects. Ortuzar founder Ales Ortuzar expressed deep personal excitement about representing Hujar, who will be the first photographer the gallery has represented since its founding in 2018. The gallery plans two concurrent exhibitions this spring: a recreation of Hujar's 1986 show at Gracie Mansion and a group show featuring artists from his circle.

In 2015, photographer Peter Hujar experienced a mainstream resurgence when his work appeared on the cover of Hanya Yanagihara's novel *A Little Life*, in a campaign for menswear designer Patrik Ervell, and at Christie's, where his 1973 photograph *Candy Darling on Her Deathbed* sold for $50,000. Now, two new publications—*Stay Away From Nothing* and *The Wonderful World That Almost Was*—focus on Hujar's complex relationship with sculptor Paul Thek, who died nine months after Hujar from AIDS complications. Author Andrew Durbin, who wrote *The Wonderful World That Almost Was* and curated the group show "How Beautiful This Living Thing Is" at New York's Ortuzar gallery, discusses their elusive bond, rivalry, and the queer social dynamics that shaped their lives and art.

Takako Yamaguchi, a Japanese-born artist based in Los Angeles since 1987, will receive her first solo museum show in the city at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) starting June 29, 2025. The exhibition will feature 10 new seascapes in MOCA's Grand Avenue space, following a period of heightened attention including a 2023 show at Ortuzar gallery, inclusion in the 2024 Whitney Biennial, and record-breaking auction sales. In an interview with Cultured, Yamaguchi discusses her ambivalent relationship with the actual sea—she lives near the coast but rarely visits—and explains that her seascapes are inspired by other artists' depictions, such as Marsden Hartley and Rockwell Kent, filtered through her own lens of "semi-abstraction in reverse."
