Rediscovering Norman Zammitt, a 1960s Visionary of the Light and Space Movement

Karma gallery in New York has opened 'Norman Zammitt: A Degree of Light', the first New York exhibition in nearly 60 years dedicated to the late Light and Space movement artist. The show features two key bodies of work: his laminated-acrylic pole sculptures and hard-edge 'Band Paintings', reintroducing Zammitt's pioneering colorist practice to a contemporary audience. Zammitt, who died in 2007, was a Canadian-born artist of Mohawk and Italian descent who studied at Otis College of Art and Design and was represented by Felix Landau's gallery in Los Angeles.

Kate McNamara Named Director of Harvard’s Carpenter Center for Visual Arts

Harvard University's Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts has officially appointed Kate McNamara as its John R. and Barbara Robinson Family Director. McNamara, who had been serving in the role on an interim basis since last year, is the founder of the experimental art space ODD-KIN and has held leadership positions at Providence College Galleries, Otis College of Art and Design, and Boston University Art Galleries.

“Living Archive” Converge+Vertex: Traversing the Minor Gesture of Timeliness concludes exhibition at Barrett Art Gallery

California nonprofits keep losing funding in what new study calls ‘the shadow of the pandemic cliff’

A new Otis College Report on the Creative Economy, titled "In the Shadow of the Pandemic Cliff," was presented at the Getty Center in Los Angeles. The report, prepared by Westwood Economics and Planning Associates, analyzes financial data from 2011 to 2023 for nonprofit cultural organizations in Los Angeles County, including museums, art schools, and performing-arts groups. It reveals that while revenues for these nonprofits surged by 47% during the early pandemic years due to special relief funding, that support has since faded. By 2023, 60% of surveyed organizations reported less public funding and 51% saw declines in private donations, a trend the report calls the "Covid cliff."
