The Bass Museum of Art in Miami Beach has appointed the Los Angeles-based architecture firm Johnston Marklee to design a new 22,000-square-foot pavilion. The Hammer Museum in Los Angeles has appointed Michael Wellen as its new chief curator and Regan Pro as chief of learning, engagement, and research. Helen Legg has been appointed as the new artistic director of the Royal Academy of Arts in London, transitioning from her current role as director of Tate Liverpool. Sundaram Tagore Gallery is expanding its international footprint with the opening of a new 310-square-meter flagship space in London’s St James’s district this May. The Smithsonian's National Museum of African Art has opened "Here: Pride and Belonging in African Art," the largest-ever exhibition dedicated to LGBTQ+ African art. Montclair State University Galleries will present “Carpe Diem: Select Alumni in the Visual Arts” from February 3 to May 3, 2026, at the George Segal Gallery. London's National Gallery is implementing significant staff reductions and program changes to address a projected £8.2 million ($11.2 million) budget deficit. The museum has launched a voluntary exit scheme for employees and will cut public programs, aiming to reduce the deficit by £2.6–3 million through personnel costs. The remaining shortfall will be addressed through other operational cuts.
Actress and comedian Ego Nwodim will co-chair the Whitney Museum of American Art’s annual Art Party on January 27, 2026. The event, hosted by the Whitney Contemporaries, will take place at the museum’s Gansevoort Street building and feature DJ sets by Raúl de Nieves and The Dare. The National Gallery in London has successfully reached a target of £2 million in annual savings following a voluntary redundancy program and a recruitment freeze. Initiated in February to address a projected £8.2 million deficit, the voluntary exit scheme allowed the institution to avoid compulsory redundancies among its nearly 500 employees. While the gallery has met its initial savings goal, it must still find ways to bridge a remaining multi-million pound shortfall through non-staff cost reductions.
Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead, England, has opened a major group exhibition titled "For All at Last Return," featuring 13 international artists whose work addresses the ocean crisis. The Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD) in San Francisco is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a public celebration on December 13 and two exhibitions: “Continuum: MoAD Over Time” and “UNBOUND: Art, Blackness and the Universe.” Since opening in 2005, MoAD has been defined by Chester Higgins’s photomosaic “The Girl from Ghana,” which features over 3,000 stamp-sized images from contributors worldwide. Under executive director Linda Harrison (2013–2019) and current CEO Monetta White, the museum shifted from a focus on historical and anthropological narratives to centering contemporary Black artists, hiring its first full-time staff curator, Key Jo Lee, in 2023.

Three UC Davis scholars, including artist and professor Margaret Laurena Kemp, toured the 'Breath(e): Toward Climate and Social Justice' exhibition at the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art. From 26 April 2026 to 10 January 2027, the Vincenzo Vela Museum in Ligornetto, Switzerland, presents "Bertille Bak: Voices from the Earth," the first major solo exhibition in Switzerland of French artist Bertille Bak. The show brings together works from the past fifteen years that combine cinema, visual arts, and field research, focusing on marginalized communities and themes of labor, identity, and resistance. Bak, born in Arras in 1983, creates video installations and narrative devices through long immersions in communities, with her work held in collections such as the Centre Pompidou and the Collection François Pinault.
