Artist Creates Playful Cowgirl Paintings and Builds Community in RiNo

Denver-based contemporary artist Ariana Barnstable has gained recognition for her "Lazy Cowgirl" series, a collection of vibrant, western-themed paintings characterized by faceless, stylish figures in bold landscapes. Beyond her personal practice, Barnstable has transitioned from being the first artist-in-residence at the EDIT at River North residential complex to becoming its art director, where she oversees community-focused creative programming.

Volume Gallery is relocating to a larger space at 1700 West Hubbard Street in Chicago, opening in February with a group exhibition titled 'The Heresy of Legacy.' The Museum of Contemporary Photography announced a solo exhibition by MacArthur Fellow Tonika Lewis Johnson for fall 2027. Elise Seigenthaler Gallery will open in West Town on January 9, while Christina Vassallo is leaving Cincinnati's Contemporary Arts Center to join the Pew Center for Arts & Heritage. Additionally, Novak Construction is set to buy the southern portion of Lincoln Yards, and a River North office building will be converted into apartments.

Nathaniel Mary Quinn, a Chicago-born artist who grew up in the Robert Taylor Homes, will present his first solo museum exhibition in his hometown at the National Public Housing Museum. The show, titled "Nathaniel Mary Quinn: A Love Letter To My Mother," features ten works on canvas and paper, a recreated living room from his family's apartment circa 1984, and a reading room with historical materials about the housing project. Separately, Mariane Ibrahim gallery now represents Chicago-based artist Leasho Johnson, whose work draws on Jamaican mythology and appeared on the cover of Newcity's April 2026 issue. In other local news, a new social club called The Lake is set to open in River North this fall, designed by Robert A. M. Stern Architects, and construction has begun on the next phase of the Southbridge development on the site of the former Harold Ickes Homes.
