london summer auctions 2662076 2662076

London's summer auction season saw Sotheby's evening sale bring in $85.7 million, a significant drop from $105 million last year and a 70% decline from $280.1 million in 2015. Christie's opted out of an evening auction entirely, holding only a day sale that netted $12.7 million, while Phillips' combined sales totaled $17.6 million. Highlights included a Tamara de Lempicka painting selling for $10 million, a Jenny Saville drawing setting a new auction record at $2.11 million, and six works from the Dorothy and Roy Lichtenstein collection. The sales were described as 'sensible' by advisor Todd Levin, reflecting a cautious market post-Art Basel.

Masterworks from Jacob Rothschild collection go to London's National Gallery and V&A under acceptance in lieu scheme

Two masterworks from the collection of the late Jacob Rothschild—Guercino's *King David* (1651) and John Deare's *Edward and Eleanor* (1790)—have been allocated to London's National Gallery and the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) respectively under the UK's acceptance in lieu (AIL) scheme. The Guercino painting settles £5.6 million in inheritance tax, and will be reunited with two related Guercino works already at the National Gallery. The marble relief by Deare enters the V&A's collection.

London's pre-contemporary art market gets boost from two new summer events

Two new summer events for pre-contemporary art are launching in London: Classic Art London (CAL), running from 23 June to 4 July, and Studiolo, a one-day showcase on 26 June. CAL fills the gap left by London Art Week, which ended in 2024, and features gallery exhibitions across Mayfair, St. James's, Cecil Court, and Belgravia, along with a talks programme at the Society of Antiquaries. Highlights include a rediscovered Titian, a solo show of Paul Nash landscapes, and a focus on Swedish Cubo-Futurist Gösta Adrian-Nilsson (GAN). Studiolo, held at Spencer House, presents art, antiquities, and sculpture.
