Zuccaire Gallery Exhibit Explores Power of Indigenous Language in Contemporary Art

The Paul W. Zuccaire Gallery at Stony Brook University presents "Weaving Words, Weaving Worlds: The Power of Indigenous Language in Contemporary Art," a group exhibition featuring 24 artists including Jeffrey Gibson, Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, and Kay WalkingStick. The show, on view from July 17 through November 22, explores how traditional and new media art can serve as a vessel for cultural continuity, storytelling, and the reclamation of Indigenous languages, with a focus on Algonquian languages spoken across Long Island and the Northeast. The Paul W. Zuccaire Gallery at Stony Brook University hosted the opening reception of the ninth annual combined Senior Show and URECA Arts Exhibition on April 29, drawing about 300 attendees including students, faculty, staff, university leaders, and local museum curators. The Senior Show, a nearly 50-year tradition, features works by senior studio art majors and minors, while the URECA exhibition highlights undergraduate research-based art selected by faculty. This year's exhibition is noted for its diversity in subject matter and materials, from chalk painting to digital media, and runs through May 22.

Annual Student Art Exhibitions on Display at the Zuccaire Gallery

The Zuccaire Gallery at Staller Center is hosting two annual student art exhibitions: the Senior Show (April 29 to May 22) and the URECA Art Exhibition (April 29 to May 13). The Senior Show features works by graduating studio art majors and minors and digital art minors, including paintings, sculpture, ceramics, prints, photographs, digital media, and mixed-media installations. The URECA Art Exhibition highlights outstanding undergraduate artwork selected by Department of Art faculty, with juried awards presented by the Division of Student Affairs and Gallery North. An artist reception is scheduled for April 29.

Taking It to the Next Level: 2025 Zuccaire Gallery Senior Show & URECA Art Exhibition

Nearly 150 pieces of student art are on display at the Zuccaire Gallery’s annual Senior Show & URECA Art Exhibition, held on the first floor of the Staller Center at Stony Brook University. The exhibition features works by students such as Hunter Moore, who created an acrylic landscape titled 'Beginning of the End' and a bronze goat sculpture exploring religious themes, and Juno Stuelke, whose piece 'Manic' addresses mental health. The show includes more sculptures than previous years, record-breaking attendance of 250 at the opening reception, and awards such as the Staller Center Award for Excellence, won by Nicholas Simms for his installation of 100 ceramic cassette tapes.
