Mashonda Tifrere, an art collector, musician, and founder of two art-based nonprofits, has launched two new projects in San Diego. The Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History (MAH) is celebrating its 30th anniversary with two concurrent exhibitions: “This is Thirty: Celebrating the MAH and Our Creative Community,” which mixes permanent collection works with new acquisitions, and “The Things We Did and Didn’t Do,” an archival installation by local artist Joshua Moreno. The museum originated from a merger of the Santa Cruz Historical Society and the Art Museum of Santa Cruz County, delayed by the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, and opened in 1996. The exhibits feature earthquake-related artworks, pieces by founding director Charles Hilger, and contributions from the family of Executive Director Ginger Shulick Porcella, including wearable art by her late mother-in-law Yvonne Porcella.
Marge Dean, an Emmy-winning animation producer and head of Skybound Entertainment, opens a new conceptual art exhibition titled "The Sweepers" at Automata gallery in Los Angeles' Chinatown on November 7. The show imagines a world where housework is valued as highly as fine art, presenting the fictional "Floor Field Cleaning" art movement (1940-1975) through portraits, floor samples, biographies, and an animated interview with a housewife named Laurie Poons. Dean, who is also founder of Women in Animation, created the work during the COVID lockdown, using rotoscoping and Photoshop to explore the intersection of domestic labor and artistic value.
Laura Green and Pierre Bounaud have co-curated a new exhibition titled "The Natural World" at The Studio Door in Hillcrest, San Diego, running from May 8 through June 12. The show features paintings by Green and ceramic and glass works selected by Bounaud, all exploring humanity's complex relationship with nature. Green's impressionistic paintings focus on animals and plants from the San Diego landscape, while Bounaud emphasizes clay and glass as materials drawn from the earth. Oolong Gallery in La Jolla, California, is presenting 'Sun Goin’ Down,' the first solo exhibition of painter John Singletary, a 2025 UC San Diego MFA graduate. The show features a series of haunting, symbolic paintings that explore memory, myth, and themes of death, love, and fear through techniques like sgraffito and sanding. It runs through June 25, with a special Juneteenth event planned for June 19.
