Walker Art Center Restaurant Cuts Front-of-House Staff as QR Codes Take Over

Cardamom, the in-house restaurant at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, is laying off sixteen front-of-house staff members as it transitions to a QR-code-based ordering system. The restaurant’s operator, DDP Restaurant Group, cited fluctuating museum traffic and rising operational costs as the primary drivers for the shift to a counter-service model. While kitchen staff and bartenders will remain, the move effectively replaces traditional table service with digital automation.

The Bascom: A Center for the Visual Arts is set to debut a new exhibition by photography resident Dean Kessmann titled "realism succumbing to abstraction or is it the other way around" on April 18, 2026. The show features medium-format digital photographs captured during Kessmann’s sabbatical residency, focusing on the overlooked textures of urban landscapes such as sidewalks, graffiti, and signage. The exhibition includes unique physical presentations, with some works mounted on oriented strand board to mirror the industrial surfaces depicted in the images.

Virginia Commonwealth University's School of the Arts (VCUarts) is presenting its 2026 Master of Fine Arts Thesis Exhibition in two parts at the Institute for Contemporary Art in Richmond. The exhibition showcases the culminating work of 28 MFA candidates across disciplines including Craft/Material Studies, Graphic Design, Painting + Printmaking, and Sculpture + Extended Media, curated by Egbert Vongmalaithong of the ICA and guest curator Taylor Jasper from the Walker Art Center.
