will this ultra rare painting by famed filipina painter anita magsaysay ho break records 2650460

León Gallery's Spectacular Mid Year Auction 2025 will feature a rare egg tempera painting by pioneering Filipina modernist Anita Magsaysay-Ho titled *Water Carriers / Taga-igib* (1947). The work is expected to draw strong market interest, following the artist's previous egg tempera sales at the same auction house—*Tinapa (Fish) Vendors* (1975) and *Fruit Market* (1957)—which fetched $1.52 million and $1.56 million respectively. Only about 20 works by Magsaysay-Ho exist in this delicate medium, making this lot exceptionally scarce. The sale also includes three works by Spanish Filipino artist Fernando Zóbel, whose market has recently surged after exhibitions at the Prado Museum, Ayala Museum, and National Gallery Singapore.

Zóbel pieces headline Leon Gallery’s ‘The Spectacular Mid-Year Auction’

Leon Gallery's 'The Spectacular Mid-Year Auction' in Makati City features several key artworks from the Zóbel de Ayala family collection, including Fernando Amorsolo's 'The Burning of Manila'—one of the largest Amorsolo paintings ever auctioned—and multiple pieces by Fernando Zóbel, such as 'Versión en Toledo', 'Variante Sobre Un Tema de Cassatt', 'Talgo', and 'Pequeño homenaje a Stravinski'. Other notable lots include Anita Magsaysay-Ho's 'Water Carriers', Vicente Manansala's 'From the Market', and Hernando R. Ocampo's 'Miners'. The auction, scheduled for June 7, 2025, marks Leon Gallery's 15th anniversary in the art business.

On June 7, Manila-based Léon Gallery Art and Antiquities held its Spectacular Mid-Year Auction, kicking off the gallery's 15th-anniversary celebrations. The sale featured modern and contemporary works by leading Filipino artists, including Fernando Zóbel, Juan Luna, and Vicente Manansala. A standout lot was Anita Magsaysay-Ho's *Water Carriers / Taga-igib* (1947), an egg tempera work that sold for over PHP 60 million (about $1.08 million). Another key highlight was Fernando Amorsolo's *The Burning of Manila* (1942), which set a record for the artist's wartime paintings at PHP 36.04 million ($645,460). The painting, from the collection of Don Enrique “EZ” Zóbel, had been on loan to the National Museum of Fine Arts, Manila, for about a decade before auction.
