Actor Sharon Stone is up for the Women in Art Prize

Actor Sharon Stone, known for her role in *Basic Instinct*, has been nominated for the Women in Art Prize, now in its eighth year. The non-profit award exclusively honors women artists, and Stone began painting intensely during the Covid-19 lockdowns, holding her first solo gallery show at Allouche Gallery in Los Angeles in 2023. Other finalists among the 25 competing for 22 awards include painter Bianca Raffaella, who is registered blind, and Jenny Lewis, whose work addresses menopause. The prize also features the Paula Rego Painting Prize, created with the artist's estate to honor her influence on women in the arts. Winners will be announced at a ceremony at the British Library on 17 September, hosted by historian Amanda Foreman, with an exhibition at York Street Gallery in London from 16-24 September.

Lou Billinghurst's first solo exhibition to open at Timaru art gallery

Ceramicist Lou Billinghurst opened her first solo exhibition at Timaru’s York Street Gallery of Fine Arts on Friday. The show features a range of ceramic works including wall art and three totem poles, which Billinghurst describes as bringing out whimsical elements and offering light relief from the world. She rekindled her pottery practice about 10 years ago after moving to Timaru to care for her late mother, and has since taught hand-building with the South Canterbury Pottery Group.

Nomad Artist Explores the Meaning of Home Through a London Exhibition

Illustrator Molly Maine, who has been traveling the world since 2016 while running her remote design studio, is opening her first solo exhibition in London. Titled "Nomad: Perspectives on Home in a Changing Japan," the show grew out of her experiences at the Colive Fukuoka conference and an artist residency in Kanazawa. During her time in Japan, Maine interviewed both earthquake evacuees from the Noto Peninsula and digital nomads who had relocated there, exploring contrasting experiences of displacement and belonging. The exhibition weaves together these voices through illustration commissions that examine what defines home.

Out & About: Exhibition opening at York Street Gallery

Timaru artist Kerry Irvine opened a new exhibition at the York Street Gallery on Friday, October 3, 2025.
