Diedrick Brackens’s Tapestries Beckon the Light of Freedom

Diedrick Brackens presents his first solo exhibition in the Bay Area, "gather tender night," at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco. Guest-curated by Eungie Joo, the show features 15 tapestries from 2020 onward and three new works from 2026, including the immersive installation "clearing (2026)." Brackens, a Black queer artist and CCA professor, uses hand-dyed cotton and acrylic yarn to weave narratives of personal memory, myth, and the natural world, drawing from West African weaving, California fiber art, European tapestry, and Gee's Bend quilting. His approach, influenced by the "sloppy craft" ethos of his mentor Josh Faught, embraces unfinished edges and visible process as acts of refusal against polished traditions.

Philadelphia-born artist makes regional debut at Rowan University Art Gallery and Museum

Philadelphia-born artist Devan Shimoyama makes his regional solo debut with the exhibition “SHIFT” at Rowan University Art Gallery & Museum, on view through March 21. The show reimagines the Major Arcana of the Tarot deck through mixed-media paintings incorporating oil, colored pencil, glitter, collage, Swarovski crystals, and other materials, exploring themes of identity, transformation, and Black queerness. Shimoyama, who earned a BFA from Penn State and an MFA from Yale School of Art, previously exhibited at the Andy Warhol Museum and taught at Carnegie Mellon University.

EJ Hill's new endurance performance, "Yearning for an Absolute" (2025), is on view at 52 Walker in Tribeca through September 13, 2025. For the duration of the exhibition, the 40-year-old Black queer artist kneels every day, all day, within a red velvet enclosure, referencing Catholic devotional practices, saintly mortifications, and his own history of durational works like "Excellentia, Mollitia, Victoria" (2018) at the Hammer Museum's "Made in LA" biennial. The installation also includes red leather kneelers for sale, framed kneeler pad paintings marked with the artist's indentations, and a neon rectangle reminiscent of Dan Flavin's church installation.

‘An important piece of Black history’: Topher Campbell's Tate commission at risk of destruction

Artist Topher Campbell's large-scale sculpture *My Body Is An Archive*, commissioned by Tate Modern for his exhibition *Topher Campbell My ruckus. Heart!*, faces destruction if a new home is not found by the end of October 2025. The polished mahogany and collage work, which weighs over a ton, was temporarily housed at Birmingham Museums Trust after the show closed in January 2025, but the trust can no longer store it due to warehouse pressures. Campbell has launched a Go Fund Me campaign, which has raised 85% of its £2,000 target, to cover transport and storage costs.
