17 New Artist Auction Records Set in May 2026

New York's spring auction week, starting May 18, 2026, saw record-breaking sales led by Christie's, which realized over $1.1 billion across two opening night sales. Major estate consignments from Condé Nast owner S.I. Newhouse, MoMA trustee Agnes Gund, dealer Marian Goodman, and financier Robert Mnuchin fueled the market, resulting in 17 new artist auction records.

The Raab Collection has listed a rare, enigmatic manuscript fragment by George Washington for $10,000, featuring the unique phrase "Fathers of the Senate!" The snippet was likely excised from a larger document in the 19th century by biographer Jared Sparks to satisfy autograph seekers. This sale joins a wave of high-value Americana hitting the market, including Jack Kerouac’s original 'On the Road' scroll at Christie's and a collection of vintage film posters at Propstore.

Phillips’s Modern and contemporary evening sale in London concluded with a total of £13 million ($17.3 million), marking a 16 percent decline compared to the previous year's equivalent auction. The sale was led by Andy Warhol’s "Mao" and Vilhelm Hammershøi’s "Interior of Woman Placing Branches in Vase on Table," both of which fetched £1.6 million including fees. Despite the overall contraction in total sales, the auction saw a significant breakout for Danish painter Anna Ancher, whose work "Young Girl Reading a Letter" sold for £154,800, tripling its high estimate and setting a new auction record for the artist.

Ovartaci at auction: The Art Brut master behind surreal figures and smoking phantoms

On September 23, Bruun Rasmussen will auction ten works by Ovartaci, the Danish Art Brut master born Louis Marcussen. Ovartaci, who lived at the psychiatric hospital in Risskov for 56 years, created surreal figures, abstract female forms, and distinctive 'smoking phantoms'—handcrafted cigarette holders turned into magical beings. His breakthrough came in 1979 with the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art's 'Outsider' exhibition, and he has since been shown at the Venice Biennale and the CoBrA Museum of Modern Art. The online auction is already open for bidding, with a preview in Aarhus.
