Art Toronto reflects Canadian art scene’s emphasis on Indigenous representation

Art Toronto's 2025 edition, running until October 26 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, features Indigenous art prominently across more than half of its 121 exhibitors. The fair includes a new Latin American section, Arte Sur, curated by Karen Huber, showcasing artists like Natalia Montoya and Sheroanawe Hakihiiwe. Canadian galleries such as Feheley Fine Arts, Ceremonial Art, Fazakas Gallery, and Patel Brown highlight Indigenous artists, with works ranging from beadwork and performance to mixed-media pieces that challenge stereotypes. Notable presentations include Jordan Bennett's reworked motorcycle and Nadia Myre's ceramic beadwork landscapes.

Simon Fraser University to open The Marianne and Edward Gibson Art Museum

Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia, will open The Marianne and Edward Gibson Art Museum (The Gibson) on September 20, 2025. The 12,100-square-foot facility, designed by Siamak Hariri of Hariri Pontarini Architects with Iredale Architecture, is the university's first purpose-built gallery. It will consolidate SFU Galleries and house the SFU Art Collection of over 5,800 works. The inaugural exhibition, "Edge Effects," features 12 new or rarely seen works by Canadian artists, including 10 commissions, with artists such as Liz Magor, Lorna Brown, and Jin-me Yoon, alongside Cindy Mochizuki's "Arboreal Time."

Lamentation and Celebration

Quilt artist Lois Klassen presents her first Manitoba exhibition, "Lamentation and Celebration," featuring a series of collaged textile works that explore the duality of grief and beauty. The exhibition showcases Klassen’s signature style of juxtaposing found, recycled, and commercial fabrics with traditional needlework fragments to create complex visual patterns and textures.

’Zodiac Crossroads’ comes to Kent-Harrison art gallery

The Ranger Station Art Gallery in Harrison Hot Springs has launched "Zodiac Crossroads," a solo exhibition by artist Johnny Tai. The collection features tactile 2-D aluminum etchings that blend Chinese and Western astrological symbols, specifically designed to be experienced through touch. Tai, who is blind and partially deaf, created the works to bridge the gap between traditional visual art and sensory accessibility.
